Many moons ago when they looked like sneakers
11 12 07 - 18:10 Gallery hopping in Los Angeles is very different from its kind in New York. The inconvenience of driving from one place to another makes it a tiresome task to schmooze, booze (responsibly), and get art-giddy at various spots. Granted, it’s getting better what with the “gallery” rows solidifying around town, but there is still a need to go to shows you know will be memorable, albeit somewhat sceney. And speaking of sceney, many weekends ago, Vans put together a group show at the New Image Art Gallery (tucked away in the Fairfax/Santa Monica Blvd. corner). Six LA-based artists were given the opportunity to apply their artistry in redesigning the beloved crisp, white Vans.

A little cross-promotion never hurts. Shoes by Kelsey Brookes. Mini Ipod by you know who The project is geared towards raising money for local charities, provided that artwork is sold. I was uber excited. Having grown up in this city, you feel a strange kinship with these shoes. And now that Vans is back in full force, the exhibit seemed more than relevant.

Overall, the show was very successful. Hoards of people were jammed by the bar and even more by the shoes. And in true West Coast fashion, the dependable taco truck out back served up fine fare for another night of dizzying fun in good ole, L-A.
