Spring Awakening
YOOOO guys! Last night I went to see the Broadway rock musical Spring Awakening for, like, the fifth time.
Can’t get enough. Based on the Frank Wedekind play by the same name, the show is about a group of precocious German teens coming-of-age during the 1890s. But with spring literally around the corner, I just got so inspired by the outfits orchestrated by Costume Designer Susan Hilferty. Some of the stuff is pretty incredible and here are some pics.
The girls have a big opening number and their light dresses flutter when they’re jumping and dancing around the stage. There’s a great mix of dark and dusty pallettes and patterns. The dresses are very modestly cut and the details like collars, sleaves, hems, pleats, and buttons make the frocks look authentic.
Uh oh what are these kids up to????? Anyway, this is Wendla. She wears a whimsical lacy minidress with black knee highs. She wears black flats to compensate for her scanty attire (heels would just look trashy) and she looks cute and demure.

So the guy she’s with is the free-thinking, intelligent and radical Melchior. He’s the town dreamboat. I love the guys’ costumes as well. It’s German old-school, school-boy prep. Button downs, boots, vests, dress socks, suspenders, blazers, pedal pushers —-> Obedient Sons, Band of Outsiders, Rag & Bone… it’s all relative.
Hey remember this winter Gap ad with the original cast?
If you’re in NYC and you’re into musical theater, check out Spring Awakening! The entire cast is no older than 25 years old and the performance will impress you to no end. You can even score cheap tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square or cheaper student rush the day of the show. And FYI, Karl from LOST has been cast as one of the new(ish) leads! Later dudes.
