A big shoot with some rock ‘n roll boys and girls… here’s a little sample of the stuff we’re shipping to the studio.

Models, makeup, hair, photo, stylists:  See you tomorrow, very early.

The rest of you:  go dancing!

Song + Site Of the Day

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Today’s site of the day is JacksonPollock.org, but it’s not what you think:

The site has absolutely no information about the famed American artist – instead, you go there, you click your mouse around, and you make your own virtual Pollock.  We were captivated for 20 minutes.  Then we got sick of it and clicked back to NYLON.

As for our song, it’s from a group of London transplants called The Maccabbees, and it’s called Precious Time.

The Maccabbees are the first band we’ve heard in a while that made us want to drop everything and dance, and their sound is unique without being alienating.  We’ve been playing their whole album nonstop, but if you want a quick taste, go to their MySpace page.

But if you start jumping up and down in front of your computer, don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Meet Molly, An American Girl

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Introducing our gorgeous new fashion assistant, Molly!

Molly’s been a fashion closet intern for almost a year, and we were all quite thrilled when she got the coveted job as an actual NYLON staffer.   Especially because she helps us pick out shoes for parties.

For her inaugural tour of duty, we asked Molly to take us on a quick tour of the NYLON fashion closet, otherwise known as our mothership, and her second home.

Have a look…

NYLON TV (sort of)

Friday, March 28th, 2008

We knew our name was too good to be true; now CBS has proven it:

They’ve decided to name their latest sitcom Ny-Lon.

According to Variety,  “Elisha Cuthbert was cast as Edie, the lead female role in the CBS drama pilot Ny-Lon produced by ABC Studios, about a couple having a romance with the Atlantic ocean between them. Also cast for the pilot are Caterina Scorsone as Edie’s rocker roommate and Johnny Whitworth as Edie’s rocker ex-boyfriend.”

You may remember Elisha, left, for her classic Bring It On line, “Your school has no gymnastics team, this is a last resort!”

Or, more obscure but way better:

The ’80s non-classic retro movie That Night, which also starred Juliette Lewis and every vintage car that existed in California.

But back to the TV show – well… um… at least “Edie” doesn’t work at a downtown magazine?

Lane, Lady, Lane

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

A few months ago, we met a girl named Reni Lane.

She was beautiful, sure, and smart – a Columbia girl studying writing and religions – but there was something else. Some people might call it an “old soul” but we felt like it was fresher – she’d say things and they meant more, she’d write things and they’d clarify. Reni told us she wrote songs and we thought, “huh,” and then we fell in love with them in her dorm room – she’d built a stage where her bed should be, and sang them to whomever came to visit, to study, to borrow umbrellas.

Well, some things happened since then, and Reni got some pretty big invitations to play at some pretty big places.

Last night, the almost-grown-up (she’s 20) played songs with a violin, a cello, and a piano at Sullivan Hall in Greenwich Village. She sounded pretty gorgeous, but we also dug her outfit – a tights-are-not-pants ensemble of giant Marc heels, black shiny leggings, and a long and clingy shirt obviously stolen from ABBA’s last tour.

Check her out before everyone else swears they discovered her, and listen to her stuff on MySpace!

Kiss My Glass

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I just got these really cute sunglasses from Ben Sherman.

Even though they’re adorable, and quite well-made, I’m a little nervous about wearing them for the following reasons:

1. They look like wayfarers and I am not Mary Kate Olsen.

2. They look like wayfarers and I am not Sienna Miller.

3. They look like wayfarers and I am not Kate Moss.

Not even close…

So here’s a photo of me, at my desk, wearing my giant new glasses.

Verdict?

(Seriously, my feelings won’t be hurt…)

America’s Next Pop Model

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Raise your hand if you were shocked, amused, and a little bit proud that “Emo” was a genre on the Top Model Photo Shoot last night.

Raise your hand if you desperately pretend you don’t watch Top Model.

Raise your hand if you would rather die than wear those short pants.

Raise your hand if you’re doing work / homework / pretend homework, and you just need a good stretch.

Also, if you’re a NYLON employee:  cookies in the fashion closet, xo! (more…)

Kate Hearts Our Cover Boy

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Awww!

Here’s Kate Moss, spotted in London with Jamie Hince of The Kills – otherwise known as our March ’08 cover star. The two were walking in Primrose Hill, and either couldn’t escape the paparazzi, or just didn’t want to.

For those that notice and care about this sort of thing, Kate’s boots are YSL and her bag is made of ostrich leather (whoa…) and her denim shorts are by Siwy Denim, a brand from Los Angeles.

They retail for $150 at Intermix, but there’s another way to get them if you’re desperate:

Walk into the back of your closet, pull out your least favorite pair of jeans, shred them to nothingness, and layer them over tights.

It’s not as glamorous as getting them at a cool boutique, but it’s very rock ‘n roll – and we bet Jamie’s onstage partner in crime, Alison Mosshart, would totally and completely approve.

You can click through for a bigger picture of the happy couple (all the British papers are saying they’re engaged. We’re like, yeah, we’ve heard that before…)

Song + Site Of the Day

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

anasui4.jpgHere in the NYLON office, we get a little obsessed.

We play one song over and over and over again until somebody screams for it to stop (last week:  Listen Up! by The Gossip, this week: Paint It Black by The Stones).

We also have web obsessions – links we forward to everyone, and discuss a little too closely on IM (last week: I’m Fucking Matt Damon, this week: Bob Hates Andy).

So we figured we’d pass them onto you; you’d recommend stuff to us; you know the drill.

Our first song of the day is I Am A Pirate; You Are a Princess by PlayRadioPlay.  It’s a perfect rainy day, I-want-a-boyfriend song, and its author is just seventeen years old.  Definitely worth seeking out.

Our first site of the day is Fifi Lapin, because it’s cartoon bunnies dressed up in designer clothing, and really, what else is there?

Just think of it as the Soup + Sandwich combo for your soul… or for those moments when you’re dying to procrastinate…
