SEE AND BE SEEN

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Before I head out for the final installment of Coachella 2008 this afternoon, I have to talk about some of the amazing acts from yesterday’s performances.

Kicking off with the swooning electronic melodies of MGMT, my day could not have began any better! For their final song, “Time to Pretend,” the recent Wesleyan grads jumped off the stage and started running through the audience. After the stint I met one of the founding members Andrew VanWyngarden, and took his picture (see below).

When the final beats of MGMT came to a soft hum, Kate Nash was quick to take the stage of Coachella’s Mojave tent. Sporting a plaid baby doll dress and black Oxfords, this fast-talking red-head captivated the sun-soaked crowd.

Later was Death Cab for Cutie on the Coachella main-stage, whose lyrics instantly reminded me of being a high school sophomore in Los Angeles. After Death Cab I headed over to Coachella’s largest tent — the Sahara tent — to get a good spot for M.I.A.. While claiming my spot on the edge of the press pit, I caught the tail-end of the Junkie XL performance. WOW!!! Now this is the right way to amp up the crowd before an international dance-electro superstar takes the stage (whoever planned the lineup for the Sahara tent on Saturday is my new best friend). Before the neon lights of M.I.A. had even begun to glow, Junkie XL had the entire crowd lost in one gigantic rave. (For an inside on the M.I.A. performance — which, in my opinion was the best performance of the weekend — read my next post).

After M.I.A.’s mind-blowing set, I watched the end of the more mellow Animal Collective set before setting up camp for the Yelle show. Another favorite of the day, Yelle, an electro-pop singer from France, lit up the Gobi tent — dressed up in an amazing sequined skeleton-print dress. Half-way through the Yelle show I walked across the Polo Field to see the end of Portishead and get good seats for Prince.

Golden Girl

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

While it is hard to deny how much I enjoyed hearing The Verve performing “Bittersweet Symphony” at Coachella, there was one other performance from a new performer, SANTOGOLD, that I refuse to shake from my memory.

Before Santogold takes the stage of the Gobi tent at Coachella, she sits backstage with her boyfriend and dancers, chilling out before the madness of her dance-party performance ensues.

When I approach her to ask if I can take her picture for NYLON’s blog she is delighted and almosts hugs me right away. With literally minutes left before she is supposed to begin her set she thanks me for the photo and hops up on stage to greet her fans. And then the music begins…

To compare her music to something of the same category, I would say that SANTOGOLD is the Brooklyn verision of M.I.A.. Yes, they share a strikingly similar voice, but SANTOGOLD’s lyrics are much easier to decipher, and her two dancers who pop and lock to hip-hop infused beats make the performance that much more exciting.

All I can say after this performance is that 1) I wish I was one of her dancers and 2) I wish I had the guts to wear clothes like her.

Keep listening, Nicolette.

BRING THE HEAT

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

It is four-o’clock in the afternoon and still 100 degrees. I open the front door to my hotel room and am instantly hit with an uncomfortable blast of hot, thick air. For three days, artists, executives, socialites and LA kids with lots of spare change will reside in the air-conditioned villas of La Quinta Spa & Resort as an escape from the insanity that is the Coachella campsite.

The festival, which houses thousands of half-naked sun-burt hipsters, will attempt - for approximately 12 hours each day — to expose this years’ most up-and-coming artists. Yesterday began with the pop-electro beats of Cut Copy and ended with the humble guitar strums of headliner Jack Johnson. Throughout the evening I watched acts as varied as The National, The Verve, and Swell Season (the Academy Award winning duo from indie-music flick “Once”) and caught up with NYLON favorite Vampire Weekend and my new obsession Santogold.

Divine Ace.

Friday, April 25th, 2008

LAer Ace Norton, who has been featured in NYLON for directing many cool music videos, recently created this fun flick for French musician Sebastien Tellier’s song “Divine”.

Look closely to see if you can find the divine Mr. Tellier in the video…

If he is in the video at all!

Song + Site Of the Day

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Site of the Day:
A lot of my smarty-pants friends moved to D.C. after college graduation to work as lobbyists or consultants, or underpaid but over stimulized writers at The Atlantic Monthly.

The one problem?

It’s hard to find rock ‘n roll in D.C.

Fortunately, there’s a new website that’s helping out all those New York / Boston / Seattle / Chicago / Philly / San Fran / Please-let-me-live-somewhere-cool transplants, and it’s relaunching this week.

Go to BrightestYoungThings.com to check it out, and if you live in D.C., make sure you click on their photo blog - they might have caught you in action.

Song of the Day:
It’s Tonight, Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins, because sometimes you need to know someone believes in you, even if it’s just because that’s their most famous lyric.

Winter’s on the Wing

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

It’s now officially Spring, which makes shopping tricky:  While it’s finally okay to buy those sundresses you’ve been coveting, it’s also the season of massive coat sales.

My favorite so far is this military coat by McQ, the diffusion line from Alexander McQueen.

It’s incredible looking, cut to last, and it’s on Bluefly for $249 - the same price as an H&M winter coat in December or January.

But is it worth it to invest in something you’ll have to stash away until the snow comes back?  Let me know what you think in the comments section…

Oh, and major bonus points to anyone who can reference the title of this blog post… I bet someone from Tisch or Berklee College of Music could do it…

Littledoe is Love.

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Yooo guyz! So when I started interning at NYLON almost 2 years ago, we had the best batch of interns I have ever seen (no offense new interns, I’m sure you are great too). To prove myself right, take old NYLON intern Chase Kohl and her new amazing line of headbands that she just launched, Littledoe is love. Chase hand makes every single headband, each having their own special style. From flowers to feathers, the feel reminds me of a cross between a hippie flower child and Pocahontas. You can’t get two better style icons than that, in my opinion. The moment Chase showed me her creations, I knew it was going to have to be my summer look. Now I have to decide which piece of beauty to rock! Not to mention, you might come across some Littledoe is love while reading the tabloids. Some really rad celebs have been interested in these lovely headbands. Check out www.littledoeislove.com, and the amazing lookbook shot all with polaroids! I don’t know how you will resist buying one of these! Peace~ Spacey Tracy xx

Tee Party!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Last night, Rogan Gregory threw a party at Barneys with Loomstate and Kate Nash. You could bring in your old t-shirts and they’d recycle them into Loomstate offerings for Christmas - and Rogan (left) fell a little too in love with my old yellow tee. So I traded him for a pair of Rogan for Target leopard print shorts. Good deal, huh? xo faran.

An evening with Katy Perry

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

LA based Katy Perry is an up and coming singer who will be featured in our Myspace summer music issue so when I heard she was playing a small acoustic set, I went to check out her performance.

She’s hilarious, personable, charismatic, and witty, and though her songs of sassiness may suggest otherwise, she’s very bubbly and approachable. Remember to say hello if you see her on tour this summer!

You’ll have to wait until next month’s issue of NYLON to get more scoop on Miss Perry (psst, she’s also participating in our Myspace School of Rock) but I personally like her already because we both share an obsession with heart-shaped sunnies. In fact, she’ll be selling her own heart-shaped Katy Perry shades on tour because as she exclaimed with enthusiasm, “They’re like the new Ray Bans!”
