I’m Not Gonna Write You a Love Song

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

We got a lot of Birthday Cards for our 9th Anniversary, but one reader sent us something even crazier:

Our own electropunk song.

She calls herself Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla the Girl, and she screams missives about our magazine into the mic during a song simply called NYLON.

You can listen to it here, and then let us know:

Is this what we sound like in your head?

Shirt Happens

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

There’s nothing so remarkable about this peasant blouse from Old Navy, but we’re infatuated with it, anyway.Maybe it’s the way the stitching goes all the way down to the sides, a nice detail which makes the blouse look a little more nuanced and a lot more expensive.

Or how the shape and colors will work on absolutely anyone.

And because it looks like stuff we’ve seen our moms wear in photos from the ’70s, before they threw out all their “vintage” clothing before it was called vintage and convinced their young daughters would never want to wear it (thanks, mom).

It’s $34.50, which is a little expensive for Old Navy, but maybe that means it won’t fall apart in sixth months… another reason to love it (we hope).

Song + Site Of the Day

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

If you like to window shop, you will love NotCouture, a giant file of constantly updating stuff – shoes, jewelry, lipstick, toys, paint, sneakers, CDs, everything -  that appears like little grabby Polaroids on the top of the site’s screen.  It’s addictive, so watch out, and it’s also… dum dum DUM… our site of the day!

Today’s song is Pieces of What by MGMT, because if you haven’t listened to one of their tracks yet, there’s really no excuse.

Try it; you’ll like it!

News from the Blooper Reel

Monday, April 7th, 2008

If you only learn one thing in college, it should be how to pull an all nighter without looking like you did.

If you only learn two things in college, the second should be patience.

Working at NYLON means working with a lot of other people and some major high standards, which means you may have to do stuff more than once (or twice, or three times).

Today I made a few graphics for the website – one for the adorable band Born Ruffians (above), and one for the electric photography exhibit of India currently happening at Hermes (below).

Samantha, our web editor, deemed them both totally wrong.

“Oh well,” I said, “At least nothing’s too wrong for the Blooper Reel!”

Actually, that’s not what I said – I swore a lot and sort of screamed, and then I ate some chocolate, and then that’s what I said.  So here are the rejected graphics – gone, but not forgotten.

Stay tuned to see what I totally screw up next ;)

Birthday cake, anyone?

Song + Site Of the Day

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Jinnie thought our site of the day should be Screencleaner, which is basically a puppy licking a plate of glass.

You will either look at this site and go “Awwwwww”… like Jinnie… or you will look at this site and go  “Ewwwwww”… like Faran.

Whether you go “awww” or “ewww” seems to determine a lot, including which kind of guys you will date, which kinds of friends you will have, which afterlife you might prefer, and how you would react if your house was on fire.  It also probably determines if you are good in bed or not, but we don’t really have the strength to debate this right now.

Anyway, Jinnie also likes the song I Will Never Love You More by Soko, which Faran really likes too.

So maybe there’s hope for her yet.
