Song + Site Of the Day

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Today’s Site of the Day is Uniform Freak, a giant collection of stewardess clothes from around the world.

Though all of them are interesting, our favorite ones hands-down are the leopard print outfits from Kenya Airlines.  They look a lot like the Stephen Sprouse / Marc Jacobs print that hit the runway a few years ago.  Definitely a good way to travel.

In fact, we were so inspired by the site that we found our own favorite airplane uniforms - from Hello Kitty - that you can see at left.

Seriously, if you have to hang out in a plane, shouldn’t it be with Hello Kitty?

Today’s Song of the Day is Killing Me, by the Pierces, because you can listen to it on repeat when you’re washing the dishes or doing your laundry, and it somehow keeps you calm.

Now just listen to that song, while flying on Kenya Airlines and looking at this insane uniform, and you’re all set.

Back in New York.

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Yooo guyz.

We are almost in New York out here on the road on the NYLON summer music tour. But back in NYC, things are still going on despite our absence.

Check out the up and coming NYC based artist Samuel’s new single featuring Wade from the Virgins.

Samuel teamed up with B- Roc and Mr. JPatt from Heavy Roc Music and out came a dance hit that Mark Ronson is spining on East Village Radio.

If you want a new hit to dance to this summer, check out Samuel’s “Say Goodbye”.

Hey dudes! I’ve returned home from San Francisco where I visited over Memorial Day weekend. Truly one of my favorite cities (aside from NYC of course).

I spent a good while exploring all the cool shit happening around Haight, but definitely what really caught my eyes were the series of Lower Haight street banners, contributed by over 40 emerging and established artists. These have been hanging there for almost two years now but it’s still worth the peek if ever you take a stroll up the famous SF road.

You may be familiar with some of the banners thanks to various NYLON coverage, recognizable artists like Shepard Fairey, Dalek, Miss Van, and David Choe, but it’s inevitable you’ll be exposed to many others. Street art that’s actually on the street; it’s perfect.

Diane visits Zune LA and eats a slice of pizza.

ZUNE LA is here to stay. Microsoft’s music media player known as the Zune has finally crossed over into my territory. For starters, up until 6 months ago I really didn’t have much Zune experience. I’ve been an Ipod user for as long as I’ve owned an mp3 player and here comes this newbie/underdog vying for my support. It’s gone through some cosmetic and software updates since I last remembered (again, 6 months ago) and actually works really well. And trust me, I am the biggest hater of them all so when the haterade stops flowing, you know I’m for real.

Anyway, for a while now, Jamaal Layne (Zune LA’s big man on campus) has been designing a space/venue/outpost for party- and concert-goers. Yesterday, he finally unveiled the Beverly Blvd. building to the curious. I walked in as Sean Patrick djed, food met mouths, and people gaped at the beautiful interior. I was floored too-it’s hard to believe this place will eventually be concert and party heavy. It’s just too nice for me to destroy! A lot of labor went into making it perfectly Los Angeles; there was even a life-sized zen garden out in the second floor patio. I’m curious as to what the future holds but with a schedule already packed, I’m sure Jamaal will have no problem getting the rambunctious LA crowd out.

Song + Site Of the Day

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Today’s Song of the Day is I’m a Lady by Santogold.

It’s the type of song that should blast from a roller rink in the summer - and what a coincidence, it’s finally summer, and we have a pair of roller skates in the fashion closet that we’re saving for a very special mission.

Stay tuned for our August issue for that…

Today’s Site of the Day is Kilian Nakamura, a Japanese toy store that has basically everything including (for real):  Robot fireflies, fizzy bubble bath tablets that look like money, a Hello Kitty laser beam, and something called “Virtual Bubble Wrap” that you can keep on your desk and pop when you’re feeling stressed out.

The site also sells “Love Bath,” which is what’s pictured at left.  They ship to the US, and the whole thing is insanely fun.

Speaking of insanely fun, Marvin met a cool hairdresser in LA named Victoria who has a club called The Miniskirts.  It’s a group of California girls who all own mini-coopers, and try to drive them en-masse at rallies.  Check them out before they get their own clothing line / reality show /plastic dolls:

Twelve BarI’m not a big T-shirt person. Despite living in sunny California, I rarely wear Ts unless it’s to the gym or to bed. I’m a button down-Steven Alan-type of person, don’t hate. That’s because most t-shirts usually suck (please prove me wrong, please!) But then I found out about this:

Twelve Bar (an apparel brand based in London and Los Angeles) recently released Ts for UCLA’s Mighty Mic, an annual 9-day event promoting human rights awareness. The shirt features a spin off of Twelve Bar’s signature heart logo filled with images of children of Darfur. It wil

l be sold at bookstores around campus and at Mighty Mic’s benefit concert headlined by Ok Go, Zion 1, and other bands. All of the proceeds will benefit displaced children affected by Darfur’s military conflict. This is definitely a t-shirt I will happily wear.

If you want to know more about this project, visit www.twelvebar.com or www.mightymic.org.

Summer Jump Off.

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Yooo guyz.

So I just joined the NYLON Summer Music Tour in Fort Lauderdale yesterday and it is such a crazy experience out here.

She Wants Revenge is playing at the House of Blues as I type from the Be Your Own Pet, The Virgins, and Switches dressing room. Me, Cory, Nick (from the Virgins), and Jemina (from B.Y.O.P.) all went to the Magic Kingdom when the bus came to a stop.

Check out Cory’s blog for some pics from Disney World, and stay tuned for some NYLON tv episodes from sweaty Florida showing you what’s been going down on the road.

Peace~
