Girls! Girls! Girls!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Today in the NYLON office, we met Yulia from Moscow, and from Trump Management.

We liked how she looks a little like Kate Bosworth, how when we flipped through her ultra-glam book she pointed to the plainest photo of herself and said “That is the real me,” and how she’s finally in NYC fulltime.

We bet Yulia will be in big demand this September during Fashion Week, but for now, she’s all ours.

So where should we put her?

A fashion story?  A beauty story?  Inside one of Dani’s designer handbags?

Let us know.  xo faran

Song + Site Of the Day

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Today’s Song of the Day comes from web editor Samantha, who swears that Little Bit, a single from Swedish pop star Lykke Li, is like the best thing she’s ever heard.

Meanwhile, Faran thinks it sounds a lot like old-school, pre-mess Paula Abdul.

If you want to make up a dance to it on the elementary school playground, then get it here.

Today’s  Site of the Day is the Tintin fansite from France, based on the famous cartoon character (who’s actually Belgian) and his comic strip adventures.

With all the francophone graffiti and French cartoon art exploding over the fashion and music scene, we figured it would be a good idea to show you where Fafi, Yelle, and the Amelie art directors checked their childhood.

Plus, they have a cool Blast Off game where you can steer a cartoon rocket into space… xo faran

From NY to NYLON!

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

If you’ve gotten the June issue of NYLON already, you may have noticed an ad for SUPRA street wear, shot by photographer Merlin Bronques (who also runs Last Night’s Party and just did the N.E.R.D.S video with Pharrel and Linday Lohan).

The ad stars 18-year-old Kay Goldberg, whom you may recognize for sneaking into every. party. imaginable.

She’s pretty awesome.

She was also the cover girl for New York Magazine‘s Look Book, a giant compilation of their favorite street style moments.

That’s Kay on the cover – at age fourteen – and then here she is at age eighteen.

It’s kinda cool that she’s grown from NY to NYLON, and all of her Supra clothes are obviously awesome, but we’ve got to say:

Those rainbow knee-highs need to make a serious comeback.

We love you, Kay! xo F.

The Life Ball, Chapter Three: “Lingerie of Every Shape and Size Flew Off…”

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

The sun was already low, the air warm, and the energy electric as Life Ball’s ceremonies began.

Debbie Harry perormed in a blazing red dress. Sharon Stone, in her capacity as amfAR chairwoman gave a rousing speech denouncing degradation and demanding tolerance.

The runway show itself was again a statement and celebration of inclusivity as City Hall Square (Rathausplatz) was flooded for the chance to witness the maddeningly dazzling mixture of models and international celebutantes defiantly march, sashay, and coquettishly play around a catwalk built to resemble the iconic red AIDS ribbon- a curvaceous platform perfectly mirroring A.P’s signature silhouettes.

The many models and performers- including Lily Cole, Dji Dieng, Lydia Hearst, Markus Schenkenberg- appearing on the runway were also an expression of unbiased acceptance as A.P and other entertainers, including Amanda Lepore, seductively synchronized with the mission of the night, debunking lingering stigmas that AIDS and HIV affect only those practicing alternative lifestyles with cheerfully sexual, stylish flair.

Revelers all around enjoyed every hot second and sound, particularly as British quintet the Feeling took to the stage to drum up heart-pounding excitement for the fashion show’s finale as the models all floated- queenly in vertiginously high heels- back on to the catwalk.

The Life Ball, Chapter Two

Monday, May 19th, 2008

This past Thursday evening, while heading across the Atlantic to Austria with a rousing mix of models, make-up artists, celebrities, and larger-than-life personalities, I tried to conceptualize what it would be like to be amidst forty-thousand people ecstatically converged in one place for one cause, and mostly likely dressed to infinity and beyond. Madison Square Garden seats around twenty thousand concert-goers, as does the O2  Arena in London. My largest bases of comparison.

Seasoned Life Ballers on board spoke of past parties with illuminated eyes and sly smiles, foretelling of an extravaganza unlike no other, stateside or otherwise. I am besotted with Agent Provocateur and could not wait for the pasties, whips, waspies- oh my!

More and more questions mounted in my mind and upon arrival mid-day Friday, my biorhythms were off and my interests positively peaking. I had been to Vienna before, but knew this was a chance to see it through an entirely unconventional lens. The weekend’s schedule was laid out, the catwalk constructed, and the fever absolutely pitched.

Life Ball’s motto states:

Love is Infinite. Life is Universal. To that I must add: Sleep is superfluous.

Quote of the Day

“Is that a Horror or a MisShape?”

A NYLON staffer, after seeing the pic at left, taken by Hedi Slimane for a NYLON web story today.

For the record, it’s a Horror – Rhys Webb, who bestowed himself with the nickname “Spider.”

Superpowers not included, but hey, what can you do.

What’s Lily Cole Doing in A Leather Catsuit?

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Well, you’ll have to find out tomorrow, won’t you?

But here’s a good teaser / hint:

She’s in Vienna…

Raising money for AIDS research…

Styled by Agent Provocateur…

And photographed by our amazing jet set spy, Helen Armide (see that new category, Wanderlust?  That’s allll her).

Any guesses as to what Lily’s doing?

Oookay yeah, you’re too distracted by the way she looks like a fembot about to spank you.  That’s okay, us too.

Check back tomorrow for pics of Debbie Harry, Linda Evangelista, Lydia Hearst, Sharon Stone, and of course, Lily C in her underwear.

Cruising With Chanel!

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Karl Lagerfeld presented his Chanel Cruise collection last night, and our favorite look is at left:

It’s model Emma Pei rocking a one-piece bathing suit with heels and tons of jewelry.

Now here’s the thing with one-piece bathing suits, or as Karl calls them, maillots:  You can pair with some hip-slung jeans and a cardigan and turn it into an actual outfit, sort of like those bodysuits you got at Limited Too in the ’90s.

Obviously, Chanel’s suit is incredibly luxe, but if you want something a little less yacht, you should check out the one-piece suits at American Apparel, Betsey Johnson, and J. Crew – they’re all a little bit ruched, which is good when you’re looking for a suit that works at the pool, at the beach, or at a party where you’re not sure if you’re gonna strip all the way down yet.

As for pairing tons of diamond necklaces with your bathing suit – well, that’s your call, but every time I see it, I’m reminded of that scene in The Great Muppet Caper where Miss Piggy becomes a synchronized swimming star – so maybe plastic or lucite necklaces a la Alex and Chloe are a better choice for suit accessories.

Check out the rest of the Chanel Cruise collection below.  xo faran.

Hello, Upper East Siders…

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

We’re a little exhausted from our NYLON bash last night – even though there was tons of Red Bull at the club – but we know everyone wants details, so here you go…

*The party happened last night at Amalia in midtown. It was sponsored by Diesel, and started off with just 40 people – Blake, Leighton, Chase, Taylor, and some random famous cuties like Lydia Hearst, Eliza Dushku, and the model Lindsay Ellington. Naturally, Chase was mobbed.

*Blake and Penn were hiding out wayyy in the back of the restaurant. Most people didn’t even see them. But Michelle Tractenberg was another story – the girl is a flashbulb pro, and she posed for absolutely every camera in the building.

*Ed Westwick is seriously the most handsome boy we have ever seen in person.

*Jaslene Gonzalez, aka America’s Next Top Model XI, arrived in a full-length silk evening gown, which made it hard to dance.

*Someone, and we’re not gonna name names, tried to jump into Blake’s town car as she left the party! Blake proved she can take care of herself by booting the carjacker and escaping into the night.

Oh, and there were also NYLON kids…

Presents for Blake and Leighton

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Here’s a little NYLON secret:

We’re having a dinner for Blake and Leighton tonight at Amalia (paparazzi, you’ve been tipped…), and since the girls did such a gorgeous job posing for us on the May cover (or should we say covers?), we got them a little giftbag.  Here’s what Blake and Leighton score just for being TV stars:

Powder Pink Boosted Headphones (to tune out Little J when she gets annoying…)

WESC Hot Pink Headphones (more portable, for jet setting)

A Clawmoney Graffiti Bag with Gold Lipstick Charms from Paris

A month-long VIP membership to Crunch (because running after Nate and Georgina only burns so many calories…)

Silverjeans in dark wash bootcut

A Luxury striped polo

A Boosted cell phone holder

A copy of NYLON.  You know, just in case they forget what they look like…
