For what it lacks in warm weather and outdoor bbqs, CMJ trumps SXSW with a line-up that boasts more than 500 shows at nearly 70 venues. To call it a marathon is a bit of an understatement.

I’ll be covering the best shows and breakout bands all week, working my press badge like it’s nobody’s business (until I collapse at the aptly-named Red Bull Lounge for a much-needed back massage).

But if you’re in the city and don’t have a CMJ badge, you’re not completely out of luck. Webster Hall has a new space opening up–called the Studio–and though it won’t officially open until November 8, you can check out bands like Gang Gang Dance, Marni Stern, Crystal Stilts, Chester French, and the Jealous Girlfriends for free all this week.
