Pixie and Lily Get Papped!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Bravo to NYLON model Pixie Geldof and her BFF, the fashion stylist Lily Evans, for landing in the ultimate New York street style shot:

Bill Cunningham’s On the Street column for the New York Times.

The girls were snapped in midtown during a windstorm, looking rather shaggy in that London Girl kind of way.

Pixie’s coat is vintage, her bag is by D&G, and her shoes are from TopShop (note the little white socks coming out of her booties and under the tights – she should get a merit badge in layering).

Lily’s wool blazer is by PPQ, her scarf is by Gap, and her dress is by Rodnik, British clothing line she helped helm since 2005.

The shoes are actual equestrian boots, which you can buy on eBay for about $30.

The wind is not available for purchase.

Bag Lady

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I own so many not-plastic-bags that I have literally become a bag lady.

There are some cute (two Feed bags, a hemp bag from sakroots, and a huge “I Heart Shoes” bag from fashion week) but plenty of bad (please don’t send me any more canvas bags with your company’s logo on it–they’re really, really ugly).

Now that they’ve taken over my closet, I’ve promised myself I won’t bring another home.

But then I saw Showpony‘s silk-screened bags and I think I’ll have to break my self-imposed moratorium.

The canvas bags are covered in colorful prints of vintage bags, bows, and belts, so you can lug around your supermarket purchases without feeling totally dressed down. And at $20, it’s far cheaper than investing in a tiny purse you’ll use only once.

Cute Overload

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

We already knew that Julia Pott was awesome (she makes those animal tattoos that will melt your heart).

But she reaches new levels of cute overload with her new animated video for Casiotone For The Painfully Alone.

There’s a rollerskating bear, a one-armed panda, a rearing unicorn, and a synchronized dance routine led by a cat. And, of course, it’s done completely in pastel colors.

Seriously, if you need a mid-afternoon sugar rush, this is sweeter than anything you’d find at a bakery. Watch it now here. xoxo Rebecca

Inn Style

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

We’ve never heard of the band called “Starfucker,” but regardless, it seems pretty clear:

If you’re marketing a new chain of hotels to rock stars…

And people who want to be rock stars…

Wouldn’t you want them in your new campaign?

Here they are on a “test shoot,” aka a CMJ photo booth.

Whether or not you actually want to “sleep with us,” well.

You know the deal with guys in rock bands.

Right?

Kicking It Old School

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I’m obsessed with vintage clothes, old rock albums, and antique furniture.

But ancient vaudeville theater?

I didn’t think I’d like it.

Still, I went dragging to The 39 Steps, a Broadway play based on Hitchcock’s 30′s thriller (which was – don’t laugh – reworked as a Ducktale’s episode in the ’80s, which I still remember).

And despite the excellent Jenny-Humphrey-as-hipster that we saw on this week’s episode of Gossip Girl, I have to say, The 39 Steps is the best thing I’ve seen all month.

First of all, there’s only four people in the show – playing about a hundred people altogether.  They throw around wigs, coats, and glasses to change character, and they are amazingly funny – imagine Monty Python trying to make a film noir.

Second of all, the show lasted an hour and a half – shorter, even, than the Project Runway finale – so I couldn’t get antsy or bored.

And third, omigod, it was just so brilliant and funny.

Here’s the website; if you’re in Manhattan and looking for a good show (or if your parents / grandparents / siblings are and they’re making you come), this is the one to see.

Trend Alert: Huge Parties, Small Invites

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Yesterday, we showed you a trend called the RSVPoster, an invitation so gigantic we could literally wear them.

Today, we present the alternate side of the spectrum:

The teeny tiny invite.

Witness this confetti pill bottle, as sent to Shruti by the DJ and party promoter Oxy Cottontail.

Inside, rolled up, is an invitation to a new club night in midtown.

Of course, as soon as we saw the word “midtown,” we needed an actual pill, but perhaps that was the point.

Friendly Covers

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Friendly Fires pretty much won me over during CMJ when they started a mid-afternoon dance party during their set at Piano’s.

So their cover of Lykke Li’s “I’m Good, I’m Gone” is just icing on the cake, in a disco-funk-punk kind of way.

The band is touring with our fave Swedish import right now -I wonder if that means they’ll start playing it during their set. Lykke Li could just consider it a warm-up…
