I Pity the Fool (Who Steals My T-Shirt)

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

I do not like the name Retard Riot, but I really like their stuff:

The art and design collective had a table full of crazy posters, stickers, and graphic experiments at Saturday’s New York Art Book fair, and I fell a little in love.

My favorite piece was the silkscreened Mr. Tee – otherwise known as an American Apparel t-shirt decked with the face of ’80s television’s most beloved icon.

You can order it on RR’s website, but if you do, please promise you’ll also ask them for a future shirt with Punky Brewster.

I don’t know if they take requests, but I’d so love that.  xoxo faran

Trend Alert: Huge Parties, Huge Invites

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

It’s no secret we get invited to a lot of bashes in the NYLON office, but lately we’ve noticed an odd correlation:

The bigger the party, the bigger the actual invitation.

Witness H&M’s bash last week to celebrate their very cool, very expensive collaboration with Comme des Garcons – not only did they throw a party for 1000 people (and Maggie Gyllenhaal, too), but they sent Faran an invitation that was literally bigger than her (check it out at left).

Then we got another RSVPoster – this one for Juicy Couture‘s upcoming mega-fete to celebrate their new flagship store in midtown, NYC.   Just like the H&M invite, the Juicy Couture leaflet was big enough to wear (Faran put that one on, too, at right).

Does that mean the Juicy party is going to be even bigger?

We’ll keep you posted – it’s two weeks away.

We Can Dance If We Want To

Monday, October 27th, 2008

CMJ 2008 final stats:

33 bands.

5 run-ins with high school friends.

3 cans of (gag) Sparks.

2 late-night dumpling stops.

Even a rainy Saturday couldn’t stop the music…

So who were the best bands to rock CMJ this year?

Tag! Use Your Inside Voice

A reminder that graffiti lives indoors too:

“Dear Faran,

I found this in a stairwell off of Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side.

–Vanessa Bunster.”

Very cool, thanks Vanessa.

There’s also some cool indoor graffiti in the pizza place on Houston Street and Orchard, and several amazing murals in some apartment stairwells there – including one with the Pac Man ghosts all over it.  Really, there’s nothing better than a Pac Man ghost…

If you have photos of great graffiti, send them along:

Spotted: Jason Bourne at U Miami!

Monday, October 27th, 2008

NYLON model Nathalie Rock writes in from her dorm room in Florida with this news:

“Matt Damon came to University of Miami to promote early voting and Barack Obama… I’m a geek and part of the Young Democrats there, so I got to help out.”

And stand next to him onstage during his political rally, we might add.

Maybe we’re particularly jealous because TBS was showing Good Will Hunting this weekend, but anyway:

Even Jason Bourne wants you to vote, and we do, too.  Make sure you know where your polling place is at RockTheVote.org

And you can see Natalie in Sue Stemp’s fashion show right here.  She’s voting, too!

Gonna Dress You Up in My Phone

Monday, October 27th, 2008

To all the kids who’ve grabbed someone else’s iPhone by mistake:

There is another way.

You can cover your iPhone in stickers (like Faran). You can have it custom painted (like Shruti). Or, you can buy a really, really crazy case that covers it up.

For those that favor the third option, I present the Parra Sleeve by In Case.

Done by the Dutch artist Parra (who’s also done work for ALife and Nike), the case protects your iPhone without disguising it, so if you’re tired / busy / wasted and seeing double, you can still keep your iFriends and iLovers safe and sound, and not stealing off with someone else.

OMG, Ashley Olsen!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Try to imagine how Ashley Olsen reacted when she first slipped on this Calvin Klein dress.

My guess is that she giggled a little bit, and realized that perhaps it was time for America to see her cleavage.

It’s a beautiful dress, really, and so grown up – which is great, because Ashley is 23 now and running not one, but two clothing labels.

It’s also a good dress to affirm Oprah’s statement that Twin #1 eats a bagel every morning -

Something recommended for every 23-year-old girl who wants to look this sexy in an evening gown.

Could it be that craving Mary Kate’s style is over… and wanting the more polished look of Ashley O is the way to go?

Okay, not yet -

But this dress is a very good start. –faran
