Thakoon for Target: Buy Now

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Thakoon’s first shipment just hit Target, so if Michelle Obama’s your style icon, you know what to do:

Head to a Target store, or to their website, and figure out how many outfits you can throw together for under $75.

Don’t forget to flick through our First Look with the outfits, to see how Thakoon himself styled the collection - with clashing patterns and very cool combos that let you wear the same sweater three times without anyone noticing.

Check it out here.

The NYLON Facebook App!

Friday, December 26th, 2008

There’s been a lot of talk about homemade holiday gifts this season, in part because of the economy, in part because of world events, and in part because making stuff is really fun.

But there’s nothing wrong with craving a Marc Jacobs bag this month instead of a bunch of knit socks… and there’s nothing wrong with thinking your sister’s hand-sewn dresses are way better than anything you’ve seen in Bloomingdale’s.

If you’re of the former camp, you can head to our homepage, where Kelly, Rebecca, and I stashed some major presents (a Hello Kitty guitar, an X Box…) for this week’s Freebie Takeover.

And if you’re on the homemade-is-awesome team, that’s cool too, because tonight I made something just for you guys: a NYLON Magazine Facebook App.

It’s called “NYLON LOVE” and it lets you add your favorite NYLON covers to your profile, or your friends’ walls.  You can click here to download it.

PS: Watched a rerun of the OC today, and Annalynne McCord was guest-starring - she seduced Mischa Barton’s druggie boyfriend at the Pirate Prom.  Which is maybe what she gets for taking anyone over 15 to a party called the “Pirate Prom.”

Tag! Eye Love Graffiti

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

“Okay, so I didn’t take a picture of the graffiti of myself but I have seen it and found it online!

Go over to Peat’s Eyes.

It’s really cool.

I guess this guy just likes to put his eyes everywhere.

–Andy”

Oooh, spooky.

If you have graffiti you love, send it to faran@nylonmag.com, and yes - spray painting snow or ice totally counts, as long as the color is biodegradable - toxic snow is no fun!  xo.

Blue Crush

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

I love this dress by Rogan Gregory.

It’s tight.  It’s beautiful.  It’s warm.  Really, what else is there?

I’ve loved it since I saw it at the Rogan store, when we filmed it for Fashion Week.  Back then it was $348 and I was like, “Uh, no.”

But now it’s $169.

Which is not… terrible, but also not… what I want it to be.

And I really don’t need any more clothes.

So.

At what point does a still-expensive fashion crush turn into a purchased reality?

Aaaaaaaah.  xo faran

Fan Mail (?!)

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

We got word that some girls in Canada had a big crush on NYLON…

And they made a little movie about it!

It’s totally adorable and reminds us of our favorite times inside instant photo booths.

If you want to watch it, go to YouTube and click here:

HarderBetterFasterStronger

And if you’re moved to make your own NYLON home movie, well, we’re just a MySpace click away.

Two thumbs up -

Fine holiday fun!

Hair Today…

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Two things you should know about me: I hate pain, and I hate the time it takes to remove body hair (yes, I’m going there).

I refuse to partake in the daily ritual of shaving my legs, but with an upcoming trip to Bogota for the holidays—and not enough time to schedule a waxing appointment—I realized it was time to try it out at home.

Maybe it was just the switch from waxing to sugaring, or maybe it was just the kit (from Shobha, which is basically hair removal Mecca in NYC), but I was shocked—in a good way. Not only was it fast to do, but also remarkably easy to figure out and virtually painless. It left me wondering why, exactly, I’ve been tormented (and brought to tears of pain) for years by the waxers of New York if a zen-like experience could be had in the comfort of my own home.

For those who are ready to venture into the world of at-home hair removal, I highly recommend Shobha’s Sugaring Kit. It includes their sugaring gel that you can zap in the microwave, as well as washable denim strips, two spatulas, and talc-free powder, and leaves virtually no mess. And for those who aren’t, I want to know: What’s your advice for painless hair removal that is inexpensive and will last for more than a few days? xxRebecca
