The New Status Bag

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

“What the hell?” you may ask.

Well, actually, it’s a CD booklet, created by the French techno duo Marcheaux.

Their thirteen track listings, including the boppy / silly / fun “Dream of a Disco,” came printed on a lavender paper bag, with eye holes punched out and a note to “please do wear the bag and send us your photos.”

Their CD also instructs, in giant brown letters, “WEAR THE BAG.”

Um, okay.

Here’s NYLON, wearing the bag.  And if you’re in the mood for House Music that sounds like dancing Popsicles, you should go buy the bag, too.  And the music that comes with it.

We’re admiring this creepy / beautiful illustration by Liz Amini-Holmes.  It’s a good antidote to Rudolph and Frosty, isn’t it?

In Which Faran is This-Close to Debbie Harry

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I didn’t expect to have fun on Saturday night.

It was freezing; my boyfriend bailed to play X-Box with his friends (surprise); my friends dragged me to a party at 8:30, a time when I’m normally still napping.

And yet, I had one 0f those nights destined to be tagged on Facebook for the next three months.

It started at Santos’ Party House, where the Gay Men’s Health Crisis threw their annual Christmas party, complete with the adorable designer Andrew Buckler, cheeseball ’90s music and hot guys that didn’t care how tight our dresses were.

Immediately, that made it disco heaven.

Then there was Debbie Harry, who jumped on stage around midnight, sang The Tide Is High, and - I swear - waved at me.  It was such a scene, I even spotted the designer Cassette Playa skipping out on her own holiday bash to get down.  And then there were the dancers…

Tag! Hawaii

Friday, December 19th, 2008

“Hello Faran,

I just left a comment about the street artist your friend lovingly refers to as Cube Dude.

His name is Aakash Nihalani. His work is glorious, simple and is quite a statement.

Out here in Hawaii, there is a wheatpaste/sticker maniac (originally from the L.A. area) who goes by the name Backyard Boogie.

He’s gone Shepard Fairey on our asses!

Love…NYLON — EVERYTHING about it,
Arlys Ikehara”

Okay, next big mystery: How did Backyard Boogie get on top of the movie theater? If you can answer, or have your own graffiti shots, email faran@nylonmag.com

Gossip Girl’s Magic 8 Ball

Friday, December 19th, 2008

One of the interesting things about Gossip Girl paparazzi shots is that you can buy the characters’ outfits months before they’ll wear them on TV.

Today, Leighton Meister was shot lugging a giant Robert Clergerie tote and matching shoes in between scenes.

It’s funny because presumably, the new episodes will take place during the Spring, so what’s Blair doing in a winter coat?

Also, have you ever noticed how matchy-matchy she is?

It never occurred to me until I saw her shoes and handbag by the same designer.

Is this the return of totally matching accessories?  Or will Serena and Jenny counteract the Queen B with Converse and Chanel bags?

Eat Chocolate, Get Great Skin

Friday, December 19th, 2008

People like chocolate in a lot of things, but beauty products aren’t usually one of them.

The first time I learned this was when, while interning at a fashion mag years ago, I brought home a bag of goodies from the freebie table. The only thing that no one (not even my beauty addict sister) wanted was a chocolate scented body scrub.

So I was a bit skeptical when NYC’s Haven Spa invited me to try out their new hot cocoa manicure and pedicure. It didn’t help that the first thing I was instructed to do was dip my feet in a vat of hot chocolate…
