Gone Rummaging

Some people have Black Friday. Others have the Barneys Warehouse Sale. But my personal shopping mecca comes in the form of a small town rummage sale.

I make my pilgrimage twice a year to a church in a tony suburb 30 minutes north of NYC, where clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, and category-less items (I think they label them “bric-a-brac”) take up an entire basketball court-sized room.

Crowds start lining up almost an hour before the sale opens, and I’m always there, ready to elbow my way in as soon as the doors open. If I’m lucky, my grandma (who told me about the sale and happens to be the coolest lady around) lets me get a head start by sneaking me in through the back entrance 15 minutes early.

In the past, I’ve scored a Burberry trench for $10, a Dior jacket for $7, and Ferragamo flats for $5, but the real reason I go is for the no-name gems (and, of course, the insane ’80s dresses I always seem to pick up).

The next sale is tomorrow, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t already plotting. Unlike other sales, you never quite know what to expect, but–fingers crossed–come Monday I should have a full report. Stay tuned…xxRebecca
