The Scissor Store!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Check out this space in New Delhi, India.

It’s called The Emporio Mall, and it’s made entirely of scissors!

The name doesn’t refer to Emporio Armani, but instead the flagship for designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, who’s previously shown his work in Paris, and works extensively with Indian fabric mills to promote his national textiles and style.

Besides having scissor walls, scissor doors, scissor windows, and scissor hangers, the store also has several sculptures of scissor art.

Soon they’ll be available for purchase in LA.

First, you might want to ask that their edges get sanded down a little bit.

Otherwise - well… no puppies and no babies in that apartment.

Scroll through to see the rest of the store and the art - including a scissor Buddha you can find and buy in LA!

Hear Me Now: Cotton Jones

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Example #783,501 that you don’t need to live in NYC or LA to make good music: Cotton Jones.

The duo, born out of a tiny mountain town in Maryland, sings about - yes - small town things (like, uh, chickens), but they also inject a dark dreaminess into their music that satisfies even the grittiest of city-dwellers.

Which is why Paranoid Cocoon is my favorite new release of the week (just came out on vinyl, CD is already out!). From the thumping bass notes that open “Up A Tree” to the organ droning over sleigh bells and circling guitar lines in “Photo Summerlove” there’s a quaint beauty to Cotton Jones. It’s one part hazy psychedelia, one part upbeat country, and all-around perfect for lazy Sundays (or Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays…).

Don’t miss the band during their cross-country tour - and definitely don’t miss “Gotta Cheer Up”, which gives a modern spin on The Doors’ ’60s style with a guy-girl harmony. Hello, I love you, indeed…xxRebecca

Tag! Une Planche à Roulettes.

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

“Hi Faran!

Loved all the Twitter updates from Fashion Week!

Anyways, here are few more from Paris that you might like.

The first is from outside the Louvre, the second is further down along the Seine.

So thanks to this, I learned how to say “skateboard” in French.  I think.  Anyway, if you have graffiti - or words for “skateboard” in Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, whatever - send it to faran@nylonmag.com  xoxo

Black Magic

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Henry Holland must be an avid NYLONmag.com reader.

Proof? He paired his Pantone-inspired collection with a dark lip. But not just any dark lip - MAC’s purple-black “Cyber”.

Which happens to be a shade that I’ve written about on more than one occasion.

Most people hate it, but I happen to love it. It goes with just about everything - including a Crayola box of colors.

So Henry, if you’re reading: That lilac coat would go awfully nicely with my lipstick. Just saying…xxRebecca

Rock Lobster

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Erickson Beamon’s collection of necklaces, rings, and cuffs for Target just hit stores.

Some pieces are killer.

Others just hurt my eyes.

But this lobster? Genius.

Makes me wish it was already summer…

Behold, the Roberto Cavalli credit card.

It’s not as democratic as the Roberto Cavalli Coke Bottles we presented last season, but still, it’s fun to look at.

Now if your credit limit is high enough to afford that actual Cavalli snakeskin as depicted on the card -

That’s the goal, isn’t it?

Live from New York, It’s The Virgins!

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Dear Jimmy Fallon,

We heard you are soooo close to booking The Virgins for your new Late Night show.

You should know they are an ah-mazing band, who always put on a great show.  Every girl in New York, Los Angeles, and underneath a cover of NYLON will be watching, and also:

We heard if they make it, they’re bringing some of their hot model friends with them to sing “backup.”

The only thing you should know:

You’re a cute guy, Jimmy, a real cute guy.  But the Virgins are so gorgeous, they’re gonna make you look like Will Farrell in a figure skating costume.

But you can take it, right?  After all, you’re a big star.

GO VIRGINS!
