Hello Monday

It’s Monday and I’m kinda feeling like this Tokidoki for Hello Kitty figurine. Sparkly, but also a bit prickly. Sprinkly, however, would be way better.

The Pains of Being Totally Honest

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are getting major buzz, and not just because they released their debut album earlier this month.

Think The Smiths meets The Cardigans.

Only, not really. Because while the songs have major potential–melancholy melodies, sincere lyrics, sweet guy-girl harmonies–there’s something missing.

I noticed it the first time I saw them play live back in October. Then again when the album landed on my desk. Then again when I saw them play earlier this month.

There’s really no way to say it other than that the songs are catchy, but not catchy enough. You’ll listen to the album and think you love it, but forget all of the tracks moments after you press “stop.” You’ll see them live and bop around with the crowd, but then leave the venue trying in vain to hum a song to yourself.

And not to be a pop snob, but that’s really what it’s about–making pop music catchy enough that you can’t help but remember it. So Pains: You’re on probation until I can hum along with your songs. xxRebecca

Tag! City of Love

“Hi Faran,

I was in Paris this winter and seemed to take more photos of the graffiti I found in the streets than the actual landmarks.

Here are a few that I thought you’d like.

My favorites are the toilets they have absolutely everywhere.

xx,

Genevieve.”

Merci, Genevieve!  Fun fact:  Genevieve is also the patron saint of Paris.  If you’d like to nominate a patron saint of graffiti, or send your own, email faran@nylonmag.com

[Last night at the Libertine presentation, in a penthouse somewhere in Soho.

Rebecca and Faran look at the clothes, and then see this guy, at left.]

FARAN: Excuse me?

MALE MODEL:  Yes.

FARAN: Can you show me how to get to Hogwarts?

[Male model begins laughing hysterically]

FEMALE MODEL NEXT TO MALE MODEL:  Shhh!  Hey!  They told us not to smile.

MALE MODEL:  Oh.  Sorry.

[End of scene]

The Cutting Edge

Best Fashion Week party? Just might have been the VMan/Ford Models fete last night.

Faran worried that the combination of ice skating and booze would be deadly, and she was right–I got body checked by an out-of-control model and Leigh Lezark sliced open her hand.

But it was also really, really fun.

The best part was the mini-performance by Olympic skater Johnny Weir. Too bad Kanye didn’t strap on a pair of skates – he stayed off the ice…xxRebecca
