Hear Me Now: Bromst

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

When Dan Deacon played at Brooklyn’s McCarren Park this past summer, he opened for Devo and Tom Tom Club.

Which says nothing and everything about the Baltimore musician.

Equally epic is his latest album, Bromst, out yesterday. Clocking in at about 70 minutes, it’s equal parts acoustic bravado, electronic whimsy, and melodic dance tunes. And if that doesn’t get you to your nearest indie record store, the album bonuses should.

Each CD and LP comes with a fold-out cardboard tent – perfect for Coachella. He’s also distributing scores for every song, so that you can sing along (and, if you can sneak in your vibraphone, play along) when he tours through your town.

It’s a big, bold undertaking – but did you expect anything less from DD? xxRebecca

Snap Happy

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Danielle Levitt knows how to stay busy.

When she’s not crossing the country snapping pics of teens and promoting her book, she’s helping out friends.

First, she submitted one of her photos to Fuse Gallery’s Animalania show. Now? She shot longtime pal Claw Money‘s spring/summer ’09 lookbook.

The collection, called “Welcome to the Jungle”, features tees, tanks, and hoodies with Claw’s signature graphics. Because it is Levitt behind the lens, plenty of bystanders get major roles, from bouncers to dancing boys.

You might even spot one of your friends partying in the background…

Tights Are Not Pants! But They’re Expensive!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Introducing the world’s most expensive leggings.

At least, I think so.

They’re made of 100% suede (except for the zippers) and cost a cool $1005.

Which is… um… a lot.

So here’s the real question:

Would Lindsay wear them?

(If you would, buy the right now on Net-a-Porter).

Barbie Does Drag

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Thanks to Nirit at Paris Popcorn for this closeup look at Colette’s Barbie display.

I’m especially psyched for this Bardot Barbie, for a few reasons:

1. Those little hippie sunglasses are even more fun than Barbie’s teeny plastic shoes. Probably just as easy to lose, too.

2. The combination of the maribou feathers and giant peace sign medallion is like a Roberto Cavalli fantasy creation, and hysterical.

3. The fake eyelashes. Oh, the fake eyelashes!

As Tyra would say, Barbie’s looking a little drag.

First Barbie, then Bob?

Come On Over, Baby

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Christina Aguilera looks fantastic in the new Stephen Webster campaign for jewelry.

Even the nude lipstick she’s so fond of smearing looks really appropriate here.

Of course, we can’t see what she’s wearing below the neck -

Maybe the over-the-top chanteuse couldn’t deal with the subtle glamour, and chose something neon green with feathers, beads, and a mermaid hem.

But wouldn’t it be cool if it was just a pair of jeans?

“Hi Faran,

I went to Londontown for my birthday this weekend.

Here are some shots that you may like.

They’re all in the Portobello Market area, in Notting Hill.

Cheers!

Very cool.

Department Of Good Ideas

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

While the payoff can be great, enduring a live set is rife with obstacles: pushy late-comers, wild dancers, ear-splitting openers, mosh pit instigators, drunk beer-spillers…

Which is why sometimes you wish you could just sit down and enjoy the music.

Here’s your chance: Department of Eagles are debuting the music video for their song “No One Does It Like You” tonight at MoMA.

You can watch the screening, the Q&A with the directors, and the band’s live performance all from the comfort of your plushy seat. Even better? You’ll leave with a limited edition poster.

It’s part of the museum’s PopRally series – full info here.
