Dear Lourdes!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Can a twelve-year-old be sultry?

Is it wrong we’re even asking?

Because when New York Magazine reported the news this morning that Lourdes Ciccone Leon – tween daughter of Madonna – would spend her entire summer in New York City, we immediately thought about how the London schoolgirl is, quite possibly, the most beautiful person we’ve ever seen.

She’s also got crazy fun style, incredible hair, a really neat stepdad (ex-stepdad?), and a birthdate well after 1990.

So should Lourdes be considered a budding style icon, the way 12-year-old Charlotte Casiraghti was ten years ago, and 14-year-old Natalie Portman before her?

Or is it just, like, ew?

Let us know in the comments section – and Lourdes, if you’re reading this, you can totally be a NYLON intern… but not until summer of 2017.

A Woman’s Right to Choos

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Leslie at Racked took this great photo of a woman at the Jimmy Choo sample sale, which is happening right now in NYC.

She says, “If you buy one pair, you pay $250; two go for $480; three for $630; and if you buy four, they’re $200 each. However! Used shoes are only $75 ($175 for boots).”

Okay, $175 for a used boot?

Interesting.

Meanwhile, just as fascinating as the Jimmy Choo sale is the tell-all “unauthorized” Jimmy Choo book that hits shelves this month, and has some scandalous stories about the making of the world’s newest luxury brand.

We liked it so much, we wrote about it here.

Stop, Hey, What’s That Sound?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

People ask me all the time what it’s like to work at NYLON.

Here’s one answer:

It’s loud.

We play new music in the office every day.  We play old music in the office every day.  In fact, if someone’s iMac isn’t blaring a custom playlist – and someone else isn’t asking about it / begging for it / complaining about it – then it’s a good bet the entire NYLON staff is out to lunch.

Oh, but you want more specifics?  Okay, well, it seems like the following sounds come from the following NYLON-ers:

Luke – Anything electro.

Mickey – New Order and The Cure.

Shruti – The Killers.

Lina – Chairlift.

Nisha – Green Day.

Kelly – Boy Least Likely To.

Chip – Taylor Swift.

Our Interns – The Virgins.

What else are we playing?  Check out our new MySpace playlist to hear it all.  And obviously, let us know what’s on your playlist too!  xo faran (Vampire Weekend, Nick Drake, Does It Offend You Yeah, and showtunes.  Yeah, that’s right, showtunes.)

Hey, Hey, We’re The Monkeys

My iPhone just got a makeover, courtesy of Paul Frank.

The good news:

Now that it’s covered in bright orange rubber, I can find it easily when it’s hiding in my bag.

The bad news:

Now that it’s covered in bright orange rubber, it sort of looks like a Fisher Price Toy.

Is that okay on a first date?  xo faran

I Heart Hearts

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Public Library has been doing just fine with its collection of super-soft cotton tees.

But as much as we love Hello Kitty, Barbie, and a Bowie-inspired owl (who all make appearances on Public Library tees), there are times when you want a top that’s a bit more personal. Like, “I heart boys with brains” personal.

Ask and you shall receive: the clothing label just relaunched its website, and have a special feature where you can customize your very own tee. Our favorite? The “I heart” tee, where you can pick the cut, color, and slogan that goes on the shirt.

Got writer’s block? Public Library offers up a few suggestions (like tacos and artists), although our personal favorite is “I heart NYLON”. Just saying.
