First Look: Lily Cole’s Movie

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

If you’re obsessed with models, like me, then you probably already know…

1.  Lily Cole shot a movie called The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, directed by Terry Gilliam.

2.   Her love interest in the movie was Heath Ledger, until he passed away midway through filming.

3.  Heath was replaced by three different actors, including Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell, to make the story of the character seem more magical.

4.  So now Lily also gets to kiss Johnny and Colin, which is really just insane.

The movie debuts fairly soon, and now we have a first look at her character, Valentina.  Innnnteresting…  Do we think Lily – like her friend, Gemma Ward – is one of those rare mannequins who can actually act?

“Rock Music Repels Insect Invaders”

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Yes, you read it right – that’s the headline blared yesterday by The Wall Street Journal.

They’re referring to a particularly nasty hive of Mormon Crickets (yes, that’s their actual name), an insect that’s over two inches long, blood red, and capable of ruining hundreds of farmland acres.

The crickets are currently tearing through Nevada, leading residents to try everything possible to stop them – and it seems Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Green Day have worked better than pesticides to dispel the pests.

Meanwhile, have you guys seen the Mosquito Repeller on the iPhone?  It’s an App that claims to repel mosquitos with a high pitched frequency, but the reviews are very mixed.  If anyone’s tried it, comment!

Welcome to the Jungle

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Thanks to everyone who entered our Nixon contest to design their very own watch.

It was a tough race, but we do have a winner:

Congrats to Raven Ersery, whose zebra print accessory, at left, is just wild enough to send everyone’s hearts zinging through the NYLON fashion closet.

Raven, you’ll be getting the custom NYLON hearts Nixon watch as seen here.

But the rest of you shouldn’t stress -

There’ll be another cool contest happening very soon.  Hint hint.

Aww, sweet.

In fact, I would LOOOOVE it.

Moonlighting! With Lauren Conrad

Friday, April 24th, 2009

This week, Lauren Conrad took a break from her job as a People’s Revolution intern to focus instead on her other life -

You know, the one where she’s really famous and everybody wants to be her.

Lauren wore a dress by Camilla and Marc, an Australian label run by a very cool brother-and-sister duo who are in their mid ’20s (think Vena Cava, with a boy, and Melbourne accents).

Camilla and Marc is also a client of People’s Revolution…

Which means after Lauren was done wearing their dress on the red carpet, she promptly…

1. Took it off

2.  Handed it to Stephanie Pratt

3.  Instructed her to steam it and then fold it carefully back into its box.

4.  Yelled at her when she didn’t do it correctly.

5.  Drank champagne with Lo to forget about it.

Fortunately, the photo still stands, and it’s a good one.

Camilla and Marc have a few more pieces on Net-a-Porter.

I Fly Like Paper…

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Along with music trends, there are music name trends.

There were the “wolf” bands, the “fucked” bands, the “crystal” bands, the “the” bands.

And now?

In the past week, I’ve gotten emails about three bands with the word “paper” in there somewhere.

There’s The Paper Chase, a ’90s Kill Rock Stars band releasing a new album, Paper Route, a Nashville-based electro-rock quartet, and Papercuts, an indie psych-pop group with a penchant for spooky organs.

Papercuts is my favorite of the three – but they’re all touring this summer, so you can decide for yourself. And, yes, I’ve got dibs on the band name The Paper Jam. But Paper Planes is still up for grabs…

Like a Virgin

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Currently blaring in the NYLON office:

A cover of The Virgins’ Rich Girls by British singer Little Boots.

She changes the words to “Rich Boys” instead, and also changes the ending:

Instead of saying there’s a broken mirror on her bed, she blames it on the guy.

Typical!

Otherwise, the idea of the song is the same.

You can check it out by clicking here.

Meanwhile, if you really love Little Boots, here you go:

Her full episode on NYLON TV.

Fringe Benefits

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Our love for Pixie Market is pretty well documented.

Great clothes, great shoes, great accessories (yes, even mini hats).

But I’ve started to wonder about their styling choices.

Like the photo for the Dawn Mcklevie leather necklace; what’s the deal with the flapper fringe wrapped around the model’s head? I’m all for experimenting with fashion, but this just makes no sense.

Granted, it’s not quite as annoying as the fact that most of the stuff listed on the “what’s new” page is already sold out, but I’m making a mental note to never affix some leftover fringe to my head…

Read on for a few of my, er, favorites. (more…)
