Kick Up Your Eels

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Want new music?

Download our exclusive iTunes mixtape.

You did?

Okay, check out our Music Director’s must-hear playlist for the week.

Already did that, too?

Okay…then check out the new album from indie rock stalwarts Eels. Hombre Lobo doesn’t come out until Tuesday, but the band is streaming the entire album on MySpace right now.

It’s a concept album all about desire, so it should give you plenty of inspiration as you start off the weekend….

Booty Call

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Last week, a big box of Pirate’s Booty landed in our office.

Euphoria ensued.

Never mind the box (which I honestly contemplated keeping), it was bags and bags of the addictive snack that got us excited. That these munchies are all-natural? Even better.

Here, the results of our very professional taste-test:

We’ve probably all been to our fare share of concerts, exhibitions and parties. However, it’s once in a blue moon that the three fuse together to deliver the ultimate night out, in this case Sunday night, 8pm at Ghettogloss (L.A).

The progressive gallery hosts a birthday party for Karin Collins, the designer behind the mystical, glitter filled spoon necklaces we adore. And like all good birthdays (let your inner child get excited), the night will be joined by magician extraordinaire Rob Zabrecky.

The real cherry on top, however, will be the night’s musical entertainment - Dewanatron. The cousins cast spells with their electronic wizard skills (Harry Potter, move over). The two craft their own instruments out of old wooden junk, which makes them as interesting to listen to as to watch - check their website to take a listen yourself. It’s definitely a unique sound, one which I would best describe as M.I.A without M.I.A, and a little toned down.

So if you haven’t fully booked your weekend yet, or even if you have, make some room for this fete because who knows when the next triple threat fiesta will be.

Two Weeks Notice

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Check out the music video “Two Weeks” from Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear!

Things to love about it: the bow ties, the glowing cheeks, the goofy smiles, puppy dog eyes, and that stellar four-vocal harmonizing.

The most entrancing however, is how the band carries on the entire song based just on their facial expressions. It’ll make you feel all sorts of fuzzy happiness!

Also pick up Grizzly Bear’s new album Veckatimest (also stunning), which is out now.

The Insider Mini: Julia Seltzer

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Hi guys, happy Friday!

To the left is a necklace designed by 22-year old Julia Seltzer, a recent graduate of Pratt Institute.

At the school’s senior exhibit, I was drawn into the way Julia incorporated “natural” elements into her pieces, leaving them slightly rough and not cookie-cutter perfect.

And with the call for “going green” being very prevalent nowadays, this New Jersey native has found a unique way to blend the ideas of sustainability and nature into incredible jewelry!

Tag! Costa Rica!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

“Hi Faran!

Me and my friend did this a while ago in San Jose Costa Rica.

It’s been long since a walk by that street, so i don’t know if it’s still there…probably not.

Thanks and take care!
