Pretty In Pink
“How do they look?” asked Hoda Kotb, as she pointed to her chest. The Emmy award-winning NBC anchor and breast cancer survivor was addressing the group gathered at The Pink Agenda’s annual spring gala on Thursday.
Hoda recounted the fateful phone call she got from her doctor – she thought that it could never happen to her and then it did. She spoke about her struggle and then she spoke about hope.
As a member of the benefit committee, I had the privilege of working with and ultimately finding myself in a room with Hoda and numerous inspiring young professionals and supporters – from event co-chairs Lauren Bush and Amanda Hearst to designers Timo Weiland and Abigail Lorick– and of course, The Pink Agenda co-founders Marisa Renee Lee and Liana Guzman.
“Cancer robs us of many things: self esteem, dignity, great hair, but most importantly it takes our people.” said Marisa in her introductory speech. She was referring to her mother Lisa Mae Lee, a victim of the same disease. “Over 50% of non-profits fail within the first year of inception. During our first year, we lost my mother and our inspiration, but we never lost our motivation.”
Marisa and Liana’s efforts have created not just a ripple, but a wave of hope to join in this fight within a community of smart, empowered men and women.
Ladies, I urge you to go for regular check-ups. Guys, support us. — Shruti, NYLON TV producer
