Good Idea or Bad Idea: Jeggings

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Last week, we discovered Lee Jeans’ new pants, called LICKS.

They’re a skintight denim legging, and they’re all the rage in Australia (also the only place they’re currently sold).

Now Whitney Port appears in Dodger Stadium wearing a suspiciously similar pair, called “Jeggings” by TopShop.

And we’re like, completely obsessed, but in that jaw-dropping way that makes it hard to tell if it’s the next big thing… or the next thing that keeps us laughing.

Whitney’s paired her trendy jeggings with a leather bomber by ASTARS -

At least we know that’s never going out of style.

Google Makes an Impression(ism)

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Today, Google honors Mary Cassatt, the American painter and illustrator whose mentors included Degas and Pissarro.

Cassatt is the most famous female painter associated with impressionism, and she studied under the American painter Thomas Eakin before moving to Paris and joining the party boat (literally) where Manet and Renoir painted their friends on the Seine.

Today is Mary Cassatt’s birthday.  You can see the Pennsylvania native’s work on Google Images.   Our favorite, by far?  Summertime, painted in 1894.

Sparkle Motion

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

You: Spending Memorial Day weekend at the pool/park/beach/rooftop BBQ.

You: Too hot for red wine, too early for vodka, too full for beer.

You: Loading up on Zipang’s sparkling sake.

Last weekend, I tried out the latest addition to the world of buzz-inducing bubbles. Each bottle is a single-serving and has a pop lid, so you can bring it along on your adventures without breaking your back from the weight or attempting to use keys/counters/rocks to open it up.

But is it any good? The fact that I finished off two bottles before my friend even arrived says it all. So much for sharing… xxRebecca

Tag! The Surreal Life

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

“Hey Faran,

I spotted this Dali stencil on a beach in the Pacific, down here in Mexico.

It made me very, very happy.

Lot’s of love,

Em.”

It should have made you happy -

It’s great!

Plus you get bonus points for knowing it was Salvador Dali and not, like, some secondary villain in Batman.

If you have graffiti, send it along:

Hey, Can’t You See What I See?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Yesterday, intern Nick brought up the old Britney Spears video Sometimes.

Immediately, we all said the same thing:

“Awful wardrobe. Ah-mazing body.”

The same body that Britney shows off, eight years later, in the photo at left.

She’s wearing a bikini by NYLON It Girls Charlotte Ronson and Shoshanna Gruss, who collaborated on a swimwear line together called Made With Love.  As you can see, it’s pretty adorable.

Oh, also, trivia #1:   Charlotte and Shoshanna went to high school with NYLON style director Dani Stahl!  On the Upper East Side!  At the very school rumored to have inspired Gossip Girl!

And trivia #2:  Natalie Portman was once Britney’s understudy in an off-Broadway play when they were both 11.  The lead was played by Laura Bell Bundy, whom you may know as Broadway’s Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.

Chloe Sevigny, at left, is not in Cannes.

Chloe Sevigny, at left, is not in Chloe.

Chloe Sevigny, at left, is not in Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony.

Chloe Sevigny, at left, IS in Acne.

And we LOVE it!

Go Chloe, Go.
