A few months ago in Boston, Shepard Fairey talked about how artists could (and should) reclaim urban landscapes from billboards, taxi advertisements, and wall-to-wall poster campaigns.
Soon after, Boston police arrested Shepard Fairey for doing just that – and allegedly defacing public property in the process – but the message got out and the OBEY stickers now dotting Boston and Cambridge streets still stamp themselves in the window reflection of cars and trucks on the pavement.
Yesterday, I saw this mural on Canal Street in Manhattan, just below a giant ad for Grand Theft Auto. It totally took my attention away from Lollipop Girl and her partners in crime, and I thought it was gorgeous. More shots are below, and if you have your own graffiti to share, give it up to faran@nylonmag.com
Just don’t get arrested, k?
