We’ve Got the Funk

This summer, I was lucky enough to get a table at Macao Trading Co., the Chinese-Portuguese fusion restaurant in Tribeca that’s really very special.

For starters, it’s the only place in NYC (and maybe anywhere except Macao, an island known as China’s first - and last - colonized city) where you can get clams in black bean sauce… and clams in chorico.

It’s also got one of the largest collections of antique Asian pornography and sex toys in America. Yes. You can see it on display in the downstairs bar and various restrooms around the restaurant.

And then there’s the signature drink, called Dr. Funk

I drank two in about ten minutes, and immediately needed the recipe.

Fortunately, the bar wizards at Macao were okay with sharing their secrets:

Mekong Thai Rum served tall (Tom Collins Glass)
Splash of Grenadine
Ginger beer to taste
Fresh Fruit
Topped off with mint
Drizzle of Absinthe

Now good luck finding Mekong rum…
