Girl Talk, Part 2

The latest update from the Vivian Girls tour bus:

We headed out of Philly around 11 am today, after getting some breakfast at our favorite cafe in West Philly, Satellite. That was a high point.

Katy got denied being able to pet someone’s dog at a rest stop in PA because he was “just bathed.” That was a low point.

Our rental van has Sirius XM radio in it, so we listened to Lithium for a lot of the ride to Pittsburgh today. They were playing ’90s hit after ’90s hit. We sang along to Limp Bizkit (“Nookie”) and Gin Blossoms (“Follow You Down”), which was a lot of fun.

After that we listened to a Sound of Young America podcast interview with Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter that I downloaded the other day. I love them so much. Michael and Michael Have Issues is such a good show.

We got to Pittsburgh around 5 and had sandwiches with the Beets. We played at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, so we wanted to take a picture in front of one of his paintings, but we weren’t allowed to. So, this photograph outside the museum had to do…

Gwen Stefani to Fashion Week

Friday, August 28th, 2009

L.A.M.B wasn’t on the Fashion Calendar this season, so we thought Gwen Stefani would be skipping New York this year.  But we just got an invite asking us to a very small party hosted by Gwen herself for the clothing line.  Get psyched!!!

Girl Talk, Part 1

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

NYLON band crush Vivian Girls are hitting the road for a two-month tour across the country, in support of their soon-to-be-released sophomore album, Everything Goes Wrong.

When the trio isn’t busy with soundchecks, mosh pits, and after-parties, they’ll be chronicling their adventures for us.

It might get loud – consider this your warning…

Hello Readers, Ali from Vivian Girls here.

Last night we kicked off a nine-week tour in our homebase of Brooklyn, NY at D.I.Y venue, Death by Audio. We shared the stage with our friends in Best Fwends, Real Estate, and the Beets (who are joining us for the aptly named “Nightmare of Sound” leg of the tour out to Seattle and down to L.A.).

Ruff Club

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Last season, Phillip Lim did an incredible dress, shaped like a large t-shirt but made of tiny crinoline and silk strips that created an amazing ruffle effect.

This season, J. Crew plays mass market homage.

Their layered cotton tank, at left, mimics the effect of Phillip Lim’s casual masterpiece, but allows itself to be layered underneath a biker vest or cotton blazer.

It comes in pink and also brown and navy, so even though it’s materials are summer-friendly, the shirt can also take you into Fall.

Matte About You

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Psst!

Sephora for OPI just launched its very own series of matte nail polishes.

The three colors – a bright grape, a smoky gray, and a midnight black – go on shine-free.

Which means that your nails will finally stop competing with your sequin dress for attention.

Unless, that is, you get creative and start mixing matte with regular nail polish.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

I Feel Pretty…

Even without the beautifully shot lookbooks, we’d always crush on Lyell, if only for its perfectly-cut dresses and floaty tanks.

Now, we have another reason: the New York-based label just launched a mini-collection for Urban Outfitters.

Fletcher by Lyell features closet stand-bys like crochet vests, double-breasted jackets, and silk shifts, only for a fraction of the main line’s price.

The pieces are pretty season-less — add cable knit tights or throw on a nubby sweater and you’re ready to brave the cold.

Pick it up here - and then go back to crushing on Lyell’s lookbooks

All About My Mum

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

We love it when albums get an early digital release.

We also love it when good organizations are supported.

So consider it double love that Mum is releasing its new album early, and that 10 percent of proceeds go to the charity Refugees United.

Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know, the band’s fifth full-length, doesn’t come out in the US until later this fall, but gogoyoko.com has it available for download right now. One dollar from every album sold goes to help refugees connect with family members, via the four-year-old organization.

Now that’s music to our ears.
