Band of Outsiders

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

You’d never guess that the inspiration for Bambako’s collection of uber-feminine headbands is Martha Stewart.

Though she can make a mean chicken pot pie, style has never been the business magnate’s forte.

But designer Abigail Ricarte cites a chance encounter with Stewart – rather than a Gossip Girl obsession – as a major turning point for her bands.

Whatever caused her to turn silk chiffon, satin, and grosgrain ribbons into delicate hair accessories, we’re happy she did; the headbands are as subtle as they are cute.

Check out designs like “Tiffany”, “Katty”, and – of course – “Martha” here.

Meet our newest bloggers, The Like.

The L.A. foursome will be taking notes for us while touring with the Arctic Monkeys.

Expect cross-country hijinks and rock star moments…

NYLON! Hello old friend!

Remember us? Well, we’re back. The Like version 2.0, with two new members – Laena Geronimo on bass and Reni Lane on organ – and we’re on tour with the Arctic Monkeys all across the US of A.

We’ve finished a record with Mark Ronson, the Dap Kings, and Alex Greenwald, due out early next year. Come listen to some of the tracks here, where you can download “Fair Game” for free!

And now, how we’ve been passing time on the tour bus…

Thrash and Burn

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Our latest fashion crush?

This teeny Marc Jacobs clutch.

It’s studded, it’s quilted, it’s cool.

Oh, and also -

It’s named The Thrash Bag.

Which is exactly what we plan on doing with it when hitting up this weekend’s lineup of fantastic and probably-too-loud parties!

Great Things Together

Monday, September 28th, 2009

We’re throwing an art party with WeSC this Thursday.

Be there!

Stomp!

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Every once in a while, we look at something in the NYLON office and go “Nooooo.”

As in:

“Noooo,” there’s no way those things are that good.

That’s pretty much the concensus with these wicked studded boots, at left.

They retail at OAK NYC and sell for $268 – pretty reasonable, considering their counterparts at Chloe, Balenciaga, and McQueen sell for $1000 – $2000 a pair.

And as of now, they’re available in every women’s size.

We suspect that’ll change quicky -

You’ve been warned.

Sophomore’s Year

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

You may remember designer Chrissy Miller from the Dove commercials that also starred our style director, Dani Stahl.

Now you can buy her latest collection from Sophomore NYC (that would be her label) online!

Check out a brand new shipment of Sophomore stuff on La Garconne.

Current fans of the brand include Alexandra Richards, Bijoux Phillips, and our own Cory Kennedy.

In other words:

So NYLON it hurts.

Nooo!

So after all that, The Beautiful Life was canceled, and the CW says it’s removing the show “effective immediately” from the network.

Huh?!

That means we’ll never find out why Sarah Paxton’s dad is in jail!

Or if Mischa’s secret baby will get revealed!

Or if Cole and The New Guy will become total best friends forever!

Or how they can all afford to live in that gorgeous brownstone!

Man, this is such a bummer.

Thankfully, we can rent Aquamarine on Netflix to lessen a little bit of the sadness.

Etymology: Bird by Juicy Couture

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Birds are a big motif this season - see the Marc by Marc Jacobs bag we fell in love with last week – but there isn’t a single feather to be found in Bird by Juicy Couture, the new line by Gela Nash Taylor and Pamela Skeist Levy.

So what’s with the name?

We don’t know for sure, but we suspect it may have something to do with the English slang “bird.”

You may remember it from the Beatles’ song “Norwegian Wood” (subtitled “This Bird Has Flown”) or, more recently, in the Ting Tings “That’s Not My Name” lyric “They call me bird / they call me Jane.”

The phrase originated in the late ’50s and basically means a really cute girl -

Something you’ll definitely be in the Bird by Juicy Couture clothes!

Tag! Brighton

Friday, September 25th, 2009

“Dear Faran,

Me and my mum were strolling around sunny Brighton after some scrumptious Japanese food when we stumpled across this masterpiece.

How awesome?!

Jenna xoxo”

Very awesome!
