The Beautiful Life vs The Actual Life

Friday, September 25th, 2009

We’ve been watching The Beautiful Life closely for the past two weeks, and also monitoring your Twitter posts and emails – some of which claim the reason you like TBL is because it’s “so realistic about the fashion industry.”

Oh dear lord.

Okay, so, the NYLON crew has been working in the fashion industry for a while, and here’s a quick list of ways TBL is nothing like the actual lives of models in NYC.

1. Every model on TBL speaks English. Perfectly. With no accent (except, um, an English one). Hello, where are the Russians and the Brazilians?! (Answer: They’re all being real models in NYC, instead of acting like them on television).

2. Backstage at that Zac Posen show? It was way too nice. The couches, the televisions, the champagne – uh, no. Backstage is messier than a middle school twin bedroom, and once you get past first looks, if you’re someone’s boyfriend, agent, tabloid reporter, whatever, you’re politely told to step off until the final bows. And by “politely told,” we mean screamed at.

3. Sarah Paxton and co. may live in that beautiful brownstone on TV, but model apartments are really small, really messy, and usually in Brooklyn or at least the Lower East Side. Nobody’s gonna rent a four-floor townhouse for some up-and-coming cuties, unless they’re related by blood or alimony.

4. A Versace casting isn’t going to happen at Elle McPherson’s fake agency. It’s going to happen in Milan. Or at the very least, in Milk Studios.

On the other hand, models really are required to show up with each other at various parties around the city – just like TBL star Ashley Madweke did this week at the Standard Hotel’s Boom Boom room, where she appeared (in a cute TopShop skirt!) for the J’Adore 10th Anniversary bash for Dior Beauty with Harley Newton Viera, Joy Bryant, and Tinsley Mortimer.

Monsters, Inc!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Faran just changed the wallpaper on her iPhone.

It used to be a Murakami print that she saw last year at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Now it’s this image from Where the Wild Things Are.

She kept showing it to people last night at another art museum, where she was dreadfully bored.

But that’s another story altogether.

Grrrr!

Shipley & Halmos: The Muzak Video

Friday, September 25th, 2009

It was a total ’80s dance party in our office this morning, when we turned on YouTube and found Shipley & Halmos’ newest video.

The piece showcases their Spring 2010 collection with movement and music – the kind you’d find on a too-cool-for-you dance floor circa 1987.

It must be said – we’re totally in love.

Watch it here.

Prada’s No Pants

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Everyone’s making a big deal out of the Gaga-esque runways this season, but over at Style.com, Meenal Mistry’s got a pretty solid argument that Miuccia Prada’s been pantsless for years.  Check out her diagram on the blog!

Tag! DC

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

“Dear Faran,

After a night of hookah and roaming the streets of DC finding stuff to do this past summer, my friends and I stumbled upon this graffiti…

Figured I’d pass it along.

Robb”

Thanks!

If you have graffiti, or constitutional amendments, send them along to faran@nylonmag.com

The Ting Tings Take America, Pt. 2

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Why are the Ting Tings covered in paint? The latest from the British duo, who are in the midst of a cross-country tour with Pink:

Had a really relaxing week. The Pink touring schedule is a dream come true for us – you actually get days off!

I imagine she deserves it after so many albums, and we are happy for the rest. It definitely makes a difference to your performance when you’re not so tired all the time.

We just had a free day in Santa Fe, where we rented some convertibles and drove to the national park to look at historic sights. We climbed all the way up a mountain to realize we had gone up the wrong one, so all eight of us (us and our crew) sat ourselves down on top and just chilled out for a bit.

I got a bit worried about mountain lions and bears, but all we managed to see was one lonesome beetle.

We also did one of our paint parties with Adidas in LA…

The Shins: The Movie

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

No, we’re not talking about Garden State.

The Shins frontman James Mercer makes his big screen debut in the film Some Days are Better Than Others.

He’s not the only indie rock royalty involved; Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein also tries her hand at acting.

Although it doesn’t yet have a release date, we have high hopes for the movie (and not just because the producers were also behind Wendy & Lucy); the trailer promises a moving look into life in the epicenter of indie, aka Portland, Oregon.

Let’s just hope this doesn’t mean a Sleater-Kinney reunion is off…

Better Than ROY G BIV

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Lomography just released a new Diana camera.

It still takes amazing, one-of-a-kind pictures, only it’s a lot brighter.

Called the Diana F+ CMYK,  the camera is inspired by “the four most important colors in offset printing.”

Which, for those of you who haven’t spent hours in the darkroom, means cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.

Another way of describing it? A technicolor dream.

Of course, the only thing better than a new Diana F+ camera is a free one – which you can get here. xxRebecca

Sake To Me

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

We missed National Peace Day, but we’ve had no problem getting into Sake Week.

Yes, that’s right, Sake Week.

Like Shark Week, only with less blood.

SushiSamba (which holds the award for most premium sakes in a New York City restaurant) opened its vaults last night, filling up glasses with some of the finest rice wine around.

If there isn’t one in your city to help you celebrate, try a bottle of Zipang’s sparkling sake – the bubbles are like a party in your mouth…

Or maybe that’s just the sake talking.
