A Girl Walks Into a Surf Shop

Yesterday, I sailed into the Saturday Surf, a combination coffee joint and surf store where you can get a latte and a long board at the exact same time.

They were having a little Corona toast to Roxy, with a sneak peek of their Spring 2010 collection adorning the windows, the ceiling, and basically any surface not taken up by espresso machines and surf wax.

With the mercifully balmy weather outside, and the technicolor bikinis inside, it was almost enough to pretend summer was just a few weeks away, as opposed to a few months ago. The only telltale sign it wasn’t? Me bundled in a Mike and Chris leather hoodie, Marc closed-toe heels, and a giant Gap scarf – because, um, I’m always cold.

After snapping some photos and chugging a beer, I air-kissed all the Roxy girls and skipped outside, where I almost tripped over two boys on skateboards who looked at me – in full fashion-editor garb – like I was some sort of harmless space alien.

“Hey,” said the taller kid, holding up his board, “Want to try?”

I said, “In these shoes?”
