How Much Do You Spend on Jeans?
Today’s New York Times declares that $300 jeans are over… and $200 jeans are cool.
But if there’s one thing we’ve learned in our critically acclaimed (ha) series, My Jeans Cost Less Than…, it’s that cheap jeans aren’t $200… and for some of you, cheap jeans aren’t even $85.
So let’s do a little survey:
What’s a good deal for a pair of jeans?
How much, on average, are you actually spending?
Here, we’ll start:
Today, web designer Kelly Bruce is wearing jeans from Forever 21. They cost $12.
And I’m wearing Gap straight leg jeans (like the ones on Joss Stone, left) that retail for $60.
How about you?

The most I will spend on jeans are $159 for a pair of J Brands. I also love my $90 pairs of topshop jeans and $30 pairs of uniqlo jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:23 am
I’d spend $200 max (mind you, I’d have to look like beyonce in these jeans). And that would probably be just ONE pair. The average cost of my jeans are about $65.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:25 am
primark skinny jeans which were £8 (which is like $6 or somthing)
bloody bargin
October 29th, 2009 at 11:25 am
I’m wearing straight leg, gray, Lucky Jeans. They’re a few years old, but they cost $80 at the time I bought them. But I have jeans I bought for $15 and jeans I bought for $300. All that matters is they look great and they last!
October 29th, 2009 at 11:25 am
My favourite pair of jeans are from Urban Outfitters and they are that BDG line. They cost me $60 and were bought on a whim. I had a pair of jeans that cost me $10 from Garage for 3 years and they looked great right up until i suddenly had hips! LOL
October 29th, 2009 at 11:25 am
Yesterday I wore my $12.50 Forever 21 jeans. Tomorrow I’ll likely wear my $130ish Edun jeans. I HATE the thought of spending much more than that. Although I have. Getting a GREAT deal on GOOD denim to me means I’m paying $100 or less.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:25 am
I do have a $200 pair of Sevens that I love. They use such soft denim! But generally I get my jeans for less than $100. Arden B (who also makes Sevens) carries great denim, and they are around $100…maybe less if they have a sale.. And H&M has some pretty cute skinny jeans for less than $50.
No need to go broke on jeans, especially since ripped and distressed is back in style.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:26 am
My favorite and most fitting jeans at the moment are these Topshop skinnies I got for $80 (:
favorite and most fitting jeans at the moment are these Topshop
October 29th, 2009 at 11:27 am
*£6 is like $8
October 29th, 2009 at 11:28 am
i’m weraing BDG jeans that retail at $68.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:28 am
I have the straight leg 1969 gap jeans too, but they were cheaper for me thanks to the employee discount (so they’re $30). I also usually get the straight leg jeans from American Eagle and they’re usually just under $50.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:30 am
Skinnys from F21 $11 bukaroos
October 29th, 2009 at 11:31 am
I think you can generally find anything you want for no more than $50. But most of my jeans are from American Eagle or Gap for which I paid around $25 (on sale).
October 29th, 2009 at 11:31 am
$20 seven for all mankind from a thrift store.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:32 am
I prefer Harlow Jeans, they’re about $40 or 2 for $60!
October 29th, 2009 at 11:33 am
I’m fortunate enough to have pretty much any Levi’s cut fit me and they’re relatively affordable (mainly 511, 510, 527). BUT, Levi’s Premium Skinner run about $150 and I own two pair, because they fit so damn good. So, it depends on the fit.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:34 am
I spend 60-80 dollars on jeans, sometimes cheaper. If I find a pair of jeans that are super comfy and the right fit, even if it’s 200 I’ll buy it because its hard to find jeans that fit perfect because of my petite frame. but overall $200-$300…. thats just too much for a pair of jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:34 am
$60 dollar boyfriend jeans from the gap
October 29th, 2009 at 11:35 am
usually between $40 and $80 – Gap & H&M usually, though i bagged a pair of cute high waist skinny jeans from Old Navy for $25.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:35 am
I think $200 is reasonable, however, most of my jeans that I own are about $100 from buying them on sale.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:37 am
honestly the limit for me is 12.50 – 60 dollars
October 29th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Are you kidding me? $15 will do, $20 bucks tops. <3
October 29th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Yesterday it was $138 Joe’s Jeans, today it’s $98 Free People ones.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:42 am
I’ve shelled out for $120 bucks for a pair of YSL jeans on eBay. Best purchase ever!
October 29th, 2009 at 11:43 am
My favorites are Paige Premium Denim, 7 for All Mankind, Hudson, and True Religion (but only the ones under $200). I do have a lot of jeans from Aéropostale as I used to work there and bought some almost every month with my discount (so I could pay $15-30 a pair), but they rarely fit me right !! The thighs are always too big, grr. I have other jeans that have cost me less than $100, but the ones I wear most are the ones I listed above. My limit is basically $180-200, though I do have some William Rast that cost me more.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:43 am
I wouldn’t spend anything more than $100. most of my jeans are $15-30. and i look great. my fav pair is only $8!!
October 29th, 2009 at 11:44 am
my favorite deal was Wet Seal – 3 pairs of skinny jeans for $75 total. I got blue, white and acid wash. Fantastic.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Designer jeans don’t fit over my muscular calves. My new $30 skinnies from Delias fit me better than anything from the pricey rack.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:46 am
i can see the appeal of buying really nice jeans for like $300, but i would never do that. right now im wearing a pair of cheap mondays that i got at a thrift strore for like $10.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Im a thrift store junkie. Last week I found a perfect pair of boyfriend RVCA’s for $3. The week before Gap jeans and Volcom’s for $2. It really depends on what you consider a value. I get a rush on finding name brands for super cheap, and no one knows it’s thrift store but you. I will never pay whole sale again.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:47 am
My favorites are BDG…they’re $64. <3 em.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:50 am
After getting into the habit of shopping at thrift stores, I hate having to spend more than 15$ on anything. It’s almost sad.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:52 am
I usually wear True Religion, but I find it on ebay for up to $100. I love the fit of True Religion… they are my favorite and last forever! I have a pair that I wear weekly that I bought 4 years ago!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
With my parents divorcing and the economy not being so good, I had to say goodbye to all of my expensive jeans. The most I’ll spend on jeans is about $ 50.00. I’ve learned to be pretty good with shopping on a budget. I’ve also bought/worn some & 12 dollar jeans from Forever 21, like Kelly Bruce.
So whats a good deal on a pair of jeans? I’d say anything under $20.00.
&
How much on average am I actually spending? If I’m shopping around for jeans, I’ll spend about $ 100.00 for maybe.. 6 pairs? If they’re dirt cheap, maybe a few more than 6 pairs, but really I don’t like to spend over $100.00 on jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
cheap monday jeans $90, that’s probably the most expensive i’ve paid for jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
I usually don’t go over $100. I’m 19 and a full time student and I need to be able to save. I can get jeans as cheap as three bucks. I love thrift stores and little flea markets and whatnot. Plus you find some great vintage stuff that you can use to add that extra notch in your personal style.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
i really only wear BDG jeans, they’re like $60 bucks which is awesome. Urban had a sale where they were $40 and i bought four pairs.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
I won’t spend more than 30 on jeans. Those have to make my butt look good, and not dig into my hips. I have really big hips and thighs – and for me most jeans get a hole right on the right leg, right inbetween the middle of my thighs. After about 6 months I have to throw them out. No effing way would I ever EVER spend $300 on something I’ve got to throw out in a few months. No way. The only way you could get me to spend what is a car payment on a pair of jeans is if there was a guarantee that they would never get a hole in them
Seriously, there is no difference between the denim you find in a thrift store and the denim found in Guess – besides the name and the price tag. A little kid or little old lady makes those in a factory somewhere for less than the cost to ship them over and you want to shell out over 50 bucks for them? Ridiculous.
It’s clothes, they’ll get dirty, riped, lost, stolen and you’re going to spend a good chunk of change on them? More power to you!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
the most I’ve ever spent on jeans was $40(all star at target. great great jeans.) other than that i usually get jeans from clearance rakes where instead of having to pay the usual $25-30 I pay $7-15. I really think no item of clothing should cost more than $200 unless the entire garment is made by hand, including the fabric. and my number one rule is I’ll never spend over $100 on one item unless its Marc Jacobs haha =]
October 29th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
To be honest, in my point of view I think any pair of jeans over $100 is a ridiculous amount. I mean there are obvious reasons like brands names as to why some are way more expensive but when it comes down to quality they’re practically the same.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I think I got used to finding deals online, in thrift stores, or even sale items. So having to spend more than $15 for jeans is ridiculous!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I wouldnt buy jeans from the gap, i probably wouldnt buy them from forever 21 either. i have standards but honestly every pair of jeans i own are levis i have 8 pairs they were all between 35 to 65. i usually pick them up at UO. BUT anyway getting to the point 100.. 200.. 300 that is way to much to spend on jeans. WAY TOO MUCH. there is no pair of jeans worth it. EXAMPLE true religion. I HATE THEM with a burning passion, a friend of mine showed them to me and desperately wanted a pair, within 15 min i had convinced him that they are SO ugly, and tacky, and most of all (and this is a lot to say coming from me because i am very metro) THEY ARE JUST SCREAMING ” i want it in the butt!” its the same for all jeans i’ve seen that cost that much.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
p.s. nylon i love you.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
My comment on true religion jeans is directed towards guys, for girls its a whole different story.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
I am wearing BKE geans that are probably $80.00. The buckle always has wonderful jeans for less than 150.00, if you look online at their clearance, you can get MEK or Blue Tatoo for super cheap! I have to say though…. I was in the CITY ( I live in Livingston, MT so anything bigger qualifies as the CITY) shopping a couple weeks ago and purchased some Hudsons for 187.00 (the most i’ve ever spent on one pair) and they are wonderful! So comfortable! So….I don’t know how much is too much!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
i’m to hard on my jeans, so paying more than $50 $60 bucks for a pair is just unrealistic. I have a vintage high wasted pair that i got for ten, and cigarette skinnies from urban for $40. i suppose if i had that type of money at my disposal though and it was worth it why not drop $200? but i’m a college kid, and i’m not made of dough.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I spend up to 200$ but that doesn’t happen that often. I usually spend 50-100$ unless they are on sale for cheaper. Can’t pass up a sale on my favorite jeans!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I would say $75 max. But preferably less. I almost always buy my jeans at Express because they seem to fit the best. =)
October 29th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Here in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a pair of Seven or Diesel jeans go for at least R$1000,00 (something like USD 550,00), so paying USD 200,00 for a pair of designer jeans when I go to the USA is actually a bargain. But still, like most people here, I own just a couple of the overpriced pants.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
I have those $12 Forever 21 jeans, but right now I’m wearing J Brands that I scored for $26 at a thrift store. I’m a sucker for designer denim, but I’m really cheap, so I always manage to score ‘em for less. I always buy my jeans on sale – $100 would probably be my maximum, and I think the most I’ve ever spent on a single pair was $90 for bright red skinny AGs that were very fashion forward for their time. They’re still the most flattering pair of jeans I own.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
The most I have ever bought jeans for was $35 and they’ve lasted for 3 years! (Yay Delias!) And I just got some new Levis for $22 each that fit perfectly. I’ll never spend more than $50 on jeans, there is always a cheaper alternative to a good fitting designer brand pair.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Yeah I’m down with the $20 average. Anything less than $15 is a good deal. Any really good quality jeans $100 and under is good too. I bought some baby phat jeans for $80 like 5 years ago and theyre still great.
October 29th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Well in the U.K. the cheapest Topman jeans are around $65 and that is where pretty much all my jeans are from. I like ebaying jeans though my two favorite pairs I ebayed and I got a pair from topman for under £10 and a pair from All Saints for £30 which usually sell for £85 =]
October 29th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I am a denim-snob. My cheapest pair of jeans is from Urban Outfitters and cost $80, but aside from those, I typically buy jeans worth $120-$300–not that I necessarily pay that much! I’m a huge fan of buying denim at Loehman’s or Nordstrom Rack, where you can find fabulous jeans at a fraction of the cost. For cheap denim and other designer deals, do yourselves a favor and sign up for Hautelook! http://www.hautelook.com/invite/284462
October 29th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
$60 and under, most people aren’t millionaires and designers need to get that straight. the only thing making them $200 is the name.
October 29th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
I never spend more than $70 on one pair of jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
I get Sevens, True Religion, Lucky and Rock and Republic jeans under $40. How? a second hand store in Melrose. They are practically new but don’t pay the retail price. Which allows me to save that $ for designer handbags. You just gotta know where to shop.
October 29th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
I’m wearing a pair of high-waisted Freedom of Choice jeans. Originally $188, but purchaced on sale for $10. They fit perfectly and are so comfortable. I also love Gap jeans. They are cute and so affordable at about $60 a pair.
October 29th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
less than 60 is about all its worth, but i rarely wear jeans
October 29th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Thrift stores are a girl’s best friend. Most of my jeans have come from them and I am always amazed that I can find sevens, true religions and so many other brands for only $45! I think the most expensive jeans I own are $300 Rock & Republics, but the only reason I got them was because they fit me like a glove!
October 29th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
NO….maybe bags and shoes not jeans
http://www.craigspr.org
October 29th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Bullheads from Pacsun. Many different styles and usually 2 for $55.
October 29th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
$80 and up from abercrombie
October 29th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
I spent $180 on a pair of David Kahns & they are the only pair of jeans I have ever owned that don’t bag on my non-existent butt… since I only wear jeans about 4 times a month I usually end up wearing these every time so they are getting good use!
October 29th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Well, i must say that although cheap jeans are amazing (i got $100 Sass & Bides and $12 lee) you cant deny that if you’re a student, and jeans are your staple wardrobe, then sometimes the $200 jeans are amazing if you wear them 7 days a week, 30 weeks of the year. if you have the perfect pair, then you dont need to buy anything else.
cost per wear ladies, cost per wear.
October 29th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I second the Bullheads from Pacsun!
October 29th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
I’m wearing Uniqlo jeans. They were $40 on sale and they are the best fitting jeans I’ve ever owned.
October 29th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
I love my BDG jeans and they cost $58 to $68, but I loveeeee my Current/Elliots that cost around $300. I’d be willing to pay up to $600 for a reaaaaally badass pair of jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
I have two $12 pairs from forever21. Best I’ve ever owned. The rest cost between $2.50 and $15 from the local thrift store and get altered. I won’t spend more than $25 on any single piece of clothing anyways, but I think I could live with spending $30 on jeans and not feel guilty. For long.
October 29th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
The average cost of my jeans are 40 dollars. I only wear black skinny jeans and no other kind of pants so I buy them at Hot Topic usually but I also have a pair I got at F21 for $12. I could splurge on a designer pair if I saved up, but I just don’t see the point in spending more than 40 or 50 dollars on jeans when that doesn’t easily fit my budget. If I could afford more expensive jeans, maybe I would buy them. But I prefer being able to buy alot of inexpensive things over buying 1 or 2 expensive things. I only splurge on perfume and purses, but definitely never jeans.
October 29th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
probably would only spend about 80$ on jeans, and that’s if they were reaaaaaaally nice. there are better things to spend money on.
October 29th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
The most expensive pair of jeans I have are my Big Star jeans from The Buckle. They were somewhere around $90. I have about 5 pair that I bought recently from American Eagle now that they’ve finally stepped up their game. Usually around $50, which works just fine for me. I don’t think I would ever pay over $100.
October 30th, 2009 at 12:10 am
I always wear the BDG cigarette skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters. They’re about $60 with tax. Tht is the most I will ever spend on pants (and the only time). If I buy jeans anywhere else I never go over $20.
October 30th, 2009 at 12:54 am
I usually spend around $60 on jeans, and the most expensive pair I own retailed for $200 but were on sale for $150. I consider it a deal if jeans are under $30
October 30th, 2009 at 12:57 am
I hate jeans so $0.00?
October 30th, 2009 at 2:34 am
BDG is probably the most i’ll go for jeans. ranging from about $50-70. other than that I can’t bear the thought of spending more on one pair of pants.
October 30th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
My jeans are $27-$30. I get most of my jeans from Pacsun, but use the discount card things they give you.
October 30th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
J Crew Matchstick skinny jeans, $98. They fit perfectly!
October 30th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
The most I have ever spent on jeans was $60, that was a stretch. I average around $20-40 per pair, but have found jeans for five dollars, and lots of times ten at urban outfitters. I am a bargain hunter, I have probably 30 pairs of jeans.
October 31st, 2009 at 1:27 pm
$1-40 is cheap, $41-80 is pushing it.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:50 pm
40$ generally
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:34 am
NEVER PAID MORE THAN $30 :]
i have a levis outlet right by my house, which is fortunate… also a pac sun outlet, where jeans are always 2 for $50. but nothing beats my $13 FOREVER 21 jeans! they fit me better than ANYTHING!!!
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:23 am
My favorite jeans are Forever 21 because they fit me perfect and they are so cheap, I mean under $20 and the fit like a glove? Thank you but I’ll take 10.
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:48 am
i’m very particular with fit (skinny but not “leggings-skinny”) and so far Dior Homme jeans are the only ones that really satisfies me. i have three pairs and they cost from $165 to $300.
it’s so hard to find jeans that have good fit and good aesthetic values so for me it just makes sense to pay a bit more for them even if they’re expensive as these pairs are the ones you’ll end up wearing out.
i own almost a hundred pairs of jeans but i end up wearing only 3 or 4 favorite pairs. right now i’m wearing a pair of waxed black jeans that i made myself. cost me almost nothing but they’re serious contenders against my Dior Hommes.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
I’m wearing ByCopus acid wash skinny jeans from UO. They cost me 40 bucks. Sale section, yeah! Although I have bought jeans for 10 dollars before, which is even cooler.
July 6th, 2010 at 7:22 pm
Hi everyone
Another newbie here. I’ve joined on the recommendation of a friend on here. Looks like there are lots of interesting threads.
I love gardening and messing about with the camera so you should see me joining in with those for starters.
Look forward to ‘meeting’ you all, John from Online Payday Today
July 20th, 2010 at 4:11 am
All certainly true, but I don’t support what you say myself. I will stay the more regular view. But I certainly support your right to say it. Interesting anyway.
July 20th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
This site is so great that i will honor it with my comment
July 21st, 2010 at 1:09 am
Hi from Chicago! I found that extremely informative. Thanks for the information. I will be back to look for more updates as soon as I get the chance.
July 23rd, 2010 at 2:53 am
Interesting! But I completely different thoughts personally. But I definitely support your right to say what you like.
July 23rd, 2010 at 2:53 am
Good. It’s the same here in Sydney. Can be remarkably frustrating, but that’s life in our world.
July 24th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
I wish you under no circumstances stop! This is one of the best blogs Ive ever examine. Youve acquired some mad skill right here, guy. I just wish that you simply dont eliminate your style because youre definitely one particular from the coolest bloggers around. Please retain it up mainly because the world wide web requires an individual like you spreading the word.
July 25th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
I’m supporting you every step of the way. You have a legal entitlement to your own ideas, and you ought never let anybody tell you otherwise. Keep it up!
July 25th, 2010 at 9:18 pm
Fascinating! But you might want to check your comments more often. You seem to be taking on some dodgy comments. I had a similar conflict myself. So now I look at everything carefully.
July 25th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
Ha!Hey!Hah!. That’s funny. That’s the fourth time I’ve come acrosssomething similar. interesting.
July 26th, 2010 at 3:04 am
Ha!Hey!Hah!. That’s interesting. That’s the fourth time I’ve come acrosssomething along those lines. though.
July 26th, 2010 at 3:04 am
Interesting…and I agree with all of it. Keep up the great work…I will undoubtedly be back before long
