Do You Like Scary Movies?

Before Rebecca went home with the flu (a genuinely scary occurrence), she mentioned Scream as a fashionable scary movie.

It’s true Drew Barrymore’s crop top was adorable, but maybe that’s part of the problem - Scream was funny and biting and great, but scary?  Eh.

The same thing happens with a lot of “scary” movies.  Hitchcock films, at this point, are more beautiful than frightening.  Gory slasher flicks - even good ones like Disturbia - are just fun.  And then you get something like Turistas, which sadly just sucks (sorry, Liv).

So which movies are actually scary to you?

I’m voting for “Oh my god, that could actually happen” movies like Children of MenWar of the Worlds, and the upcoming The Road.  Also, the dinosaur / Stravinsky sequence in the original Fantasia scared the crap out of me as a child, and I’ve vowed to never see it again.

What about you? What’s actually a scary movie?

The Birds - Alfred Hitchcock - I am scared to this day of large flocks of birds!

children of men was SO intense

paranormal activity freaked me out but only because i believe in ghosts!

i don’t like the rape-y quality of a lot of scary movies today like the hills have eyes and last house on the left.

no girl wants to watch other girls get R’d.

The scariest movies are those that leave it everything up to the viewers’ imagination - i.e., films like the recent ‘Paranormal Activity’ (which has been a constant trending topic on twitter for the past couple weeks) and ‘Blair Witch Project’. When you don’t actually see the predator/villain/creature it’s always a LOT more frightening.

Funny Games. It’s about these two boys who play mind games with an innocent family, and it certainly got to me! It’s not monsters and zombies, it has every capability of happening in real life and I think that’s whats the scariest part of all!

It’s always been the moodier supernatural films that got to me, whether gory or just plain spooky. Candyman is a great one that has both some good scare moments, drips with atmosphere, and has a very different soundtrack for a horor film. There has been some interesting horror coming out of the asia the last few years as well. The original Thai version of THE EYE is troubling and very creepy, as is a spooky little gem called Acacia.

[Rec] made me shit bricks. The spanish one, not the soory excuse of a remake.
Shutter is a great one too (the thai one, not the english one).

  7. Camille Says:

The original Omen movie. It’s pretty scary

  8. Mary Says:

    Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist”

  9. Taylor Agajanian Says:

The Strangers genuinely scared me the first time I saw it. It could actually happen and their only motive was “because you were home”. Locked doors and windows didn’t matter in this movie. It was absolutely horrifying.

  10. Sara Says:

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Doesn’t matter if you watch it midday or in the dead of night, this movie is incredibly scary.

  11. Meera Says:

Yes, Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” is probably the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen. I though “Vacancy” was pretty terrifying too. And “The Pianist”. I know, not a creepy movie, but scary all the same. I like the still from “Skeleton Key” from the hoodoo room you used. That one has it’s moments too. The sounds on the record she’s holding are chilling.

asian horror movies! making me paranoid since 1999.

  13. Nora Says:

Rosemary’s Baby. Every time I walk past the Dakota on 72nd and CPW I still flip out.

the saw series scares the crap out of me!! i hate the idea of torture so those movies have spooked me ever since i watched the first one!!

  15. Allie Says:

Shutter; the Thai version, freaked me out. As well as the original Grudge, which is…Japanese?

  16. sarah Says:

The spanish movie ‘The Orphanage’ is one of the scariest films I’ve seen recently, I think because it leaves things open, and there are lots of jumpy gorey bits!

  17. Moni Says:

When a stranger calls.:) That was the only movie that actually scared me because it could actually happen!! Whereas i can watch movies like Saw and not even flinch.

  18. Victoria Says:

the original omen and the remake, its just scary because the Dameien is still around at the end. the Strangers, definitely had a creep affect to it. The first time i saw the Ring, it scared me, same thing with the grudge.

    Elephant by Gus Van Sant
    about a school shooting.
pretty much anything that shows casual & realistic killing/raping is pretty damn terrifying. the scariest thing in life is a psychopathic killer.

the FIRST nightmare on elm street allways scared me.
it made me never want to go to sleep.
i was even afraid to lay on the bed alone because of the part where jonny depp gets sucked into the bed.
(keep in ming i was verry young when i watched it)

    and IT!!!!
penywise the clown was the fucking worst

I heard that ‘Dead End’ is one of the greatest horror movie made. To add on, it’s an Indie movie - which shows we need no movie star to produce an effin’ great movie. Am yet to catch that on DVD tonight. So, fingers crossed.

And I would agree with Allie, that SHUTTER (go for the Thai version, please) is indeed a good horror movie. The twist at the ending was superb.

The Orphan was no horror, but it kept me to the edge of my seat. And being a fan of a twist in the tale - bravo!!

    ;))

SPIDERMAN 2. it’s really scary to watch Toby Mcguire tryin’ to be a mix between an emo/punk/dark/same thing with suit and of course, FAIL.
no joking, the scariest one for me i think ill be the orphan because it can actually happens and it’s as scariest as weird.
