Are You Going Vegetarian for Thanksgiving?
Warning:
If you like cute animals, do not click on this New York Times story.
It’s about vegetarian Thanksgiving, and manages to include the only cute, adorable, wide-eyed photograph of a turkey that’s ever been taken. Which seems kind of unfair for the omnivores among us.
Still, the story also has four recipes for Thanksgiving veggies, and includes comments from chefs, nutritionists, and foodies with their tips for a satisfying, healthy, delicious vegetarian Thanksgiving.
I’m betting that doesn’t include Tofurkey, which – while fun – has been universally declared “gross” by our office… oh wait, Kelly just said, “I’d eat it.” Okay, so there’s one…
Anyway, that leads to a really good question for you guys:
Who’s having a vegetarian Thanksgiving? And what will you be eating?

I, personally, like Tofurkey heh. It’s especially good with their “gibblet gravy” or whatever they call it. I’ll be eating my usual Tofurkey loaf and probably a large assortment of vegetables. I might get a vegan pumpkin pie from Whole Foods, if they have the brand I like. Or, I could skip the Tofurkey and get Quorn. The idea of it is disgusting, but theirs is the most amazing faux meat I’ve ever come across in a store.

I love Tofurkey and look forward to having it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have Tofurkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans with almonds, pumpkin biscuits, and usually pumpkin pie for dessert — all vegan. Some people get turned off to Tofurkey because they don’t baste it enough when baking so it then comes out dry and less flavorful; I usually make a baste with olive oil, apricot jam, tamari, and then holiday herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage, and majoram.
Why kill animals when you could have a healthier, humane meal that still tastes amazing. Plus, I never gain weight over the holidays — all around good deal.

For me, part of the fun of being vegan is – instead of imitating foods I used to eat – playing with grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables and making new traditions. Most traditional Thanksgiving food is very easily transformed into a vegan dish… spiced mashed sweet potatoes instead of ruining them with butter and marshmallows… leave the bacon out of the green beans, they’re better by themselves anyway… vegan pies and cakes are SUPER easy and grocery friendly (and all my omnivorous friends love them too)… etc. I find that a good stand-in for the main dish (aka dead bird) is usually based in a seasonal grain like barley. Gobble gobble!

There’s nothing wrong with Tofurkey! How can someone say it’s gross when the alternative is eating the skin of an animal? EW! Besides, the side dishes are soooo good, you won’t even be thinking about the turkey when you’re digging into the stuffing and mashed potatoes. Mmmm.

I’ve been vegetarian for a long time, but tofurkey is gross… really gross…
I’ll be enjoying salad, bread, and dessert!

Actually, Tofurkey sandwiches are pretty delicious. Especially the different herbed kinds! Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. I’ve never personally had the Tofurkey loaf, but I’ve heard it’s awesome when seasoned and put with its special gravy. Anyway.

i had tofurkey last year (my first truly vegetarian thanksgiving) and it wasn’t fantastic, nor did it really taste anything like turkey, but i would eat it again.

I’m a long time vegetarian and honestly enjoy finding weird new recipes to wow my family every year. But I never get too obsessed with replicating the actually turkey. My vote, though, is Qorn roast. Tastes way better than Tofurkey…even though I think it’s made out of corn fungus or something.

tofurkey
but this year is the first time my meat-eating family is going to allow me to do a lot of the cooking, so besides their turkey, everything is going to be veganized!
i’ve got a whole list of “pot pies” and casseroles and other dishes i’m really excited to try out

Hi everyone
Just introduce myself: I am a man (says my wife), I am 50 years old (hmm, that looks bad isn’t it?) and I am a terrible bad programmer (I say myself).
My hobbies: computer (of course), my 17 years old son and of course my wife. I like to play billiard, I do a very little bit and very simple programming in VB and I try to make a site for my billiard-club in the near future.
Take care, John from Online Payday Loans!

Great post full of useful tips! My site is fairly new and I am also having a hard time getting my readers to leave comments. Analytics shows they are coming to the site but I have a feeling “nobody wants to be first”.
