Almodovar’s Greatest Hits

Broken Embraces, the latest film from Pedro Almodovar, often feels like his own personal greatest hits.

From the plot to the actors to the movie-within-a-movie, there are plenty of references to his vast back catalogue.

While you wait for the film to open in your city (it’s out now in NYC, and will be released in LA on December 11), here are the top five Almodovar flicks to help you prepare for Broken Embraces.

Prepare your Netflix queue…

Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap

Almodovar’s first film was also his most punk rock. Pot plants, lesbian musicians, and Carmen Maura (his muse back when Penelope Cruz was still in diapers) are all integral parts of this kitsch-fest.

Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

This film is such a classic, it’s still influencing directors to this day. Want examples? Try Almodovar, who reuses the plot for a portion of Broken Embraces. You’ll think twice the next time you’re offered gazpacho.

Live Flesh

There’s lots of sex in Almodovar films, but this might be his sexiest. Take notes: Like Broken Embraces, this thriller has a plot full of twists and characters full of connections.

Talk To Her

A matador, an accident, and a medical emergency are the centerpiece of this film, but you won’t figure out the beginning until you get to the end.

Volver

The ultimate Cruz-Almodovar project. If she gets an Oscar for Broken Embraces, consider it payback for when she was passed over back in 2007. xxRebecca

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
