The Best Buys of 2009

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

We love luxury clothes and expensive shopping sprees at NYLON, but there’s also something great about scoring a major bargain.

That’s why we want to know:

What’s the best bargain you’ve scored this year?

In the NYLON office, the list goes something like this:

*$80 Luella dresses on eBay

*$15 vintage Halson coats at a vintage store Maryland

*$50 Calvin Klein peacoats at TJ Maxx in Boston

*80% off Hugo Boss heels in their downtown Manhattan boutique

*$60 jeans from Gap that weren’t on sale, but fit as well as $300 jeans from other places.

So what was yours?

“Hello, Babysitters Club!”

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Let’s just file this under “Best News Ever” -

Today, the New York Times announces the return of The Babysitter’s Club, complete with new books (including a prequel, whoa!) and memories from young women about their favorite story lines and characters.

Until they come out, here’s something amazing / hysterical / insane:

A LiveJournal page called “Stonybrook High School” with character bios on everyone the BSC goes to school with, complete with their celebrity alter egos.  Yep.

So who’s your favorite character?

Future Private Icon?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Check out the actress Bryce Dallas Howard, at left.  The 28-year-old is currently starring in the indie movie (and Tennessee Williams screenplay) The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, and she’s fantastic.  But Bryce’s acting skills aren’t the only reason to see this movie:  Check out the top of her outfit at left:  Messy long bob, burnt orange lipstick, faux fur coat – it’s one of the most fashion-forward film costumes of the season!  Costume supervisor Robin Roberts also created the looks for HBO’s Big Love and Carnivale.

What Are You Wearing on New Years Eve?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

While you eat holiday leftovers and watch every movie airing on TBS and Bravo (hello, Elf!), there’s probably a pressing question in the back of your mind:

“What am I gonna wear for New Years?”

The answer, of course, is much like expensive real estate:

It depends on location, location, location.

A house party might call for leggings and flats, while an “Are you on the list?” affair needs heels and a healthy cloud of attitude.

If you’re lucky enough to be somewhere warm (Los Angeles? Texas? Miami?), you can go straight to your favorite outfit.

Those of us in more frigid places (Toronto? New York? Chicago?) have to deal with outerwear, too.

So who’s wearing what on New Years?

Swallow It

Monday, December 28th, 2009

We’re still obsessed with the Sasha bag from Marc by Marc Jacobs, but it’s still $500 and that’s not always a doable price.

Instead, we staked out another bag with swallow decor, this one from  Cheap Therapy on Etsy.

It’s a clutch decked with colorful swallows, and it retails for $40.

The only problem?

It’s sold out until the Cheap Therapy artists make some more (probably in January).

Looks like it’s time for a DIY…

Fan Art! From Ari Patrice, Houston TX

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Check out the Blackberry cover that Ari Patrice made from old NYLON issues.

We believe in the days of the Rosie O’Donnell show, this technique was called decoupage.

We’re still a little in awe of that super cute Hello Kitty.

She looks like she’s in the middle of a Norma Kamali workout video.

Got Fan Art?

Post it on our Facebook or Twitter!

What’s Your Family Dessert?

Friday, December 25th, 2009

For breakfast this morning, my entire family ate Apple Crisp.

But not just any Apple Crisp -

My mom’s legendary farm-fresh, pick-the-apples-yourself Apple Crisp, made exactly the same way for over 20 years.

And yeah, it was amazing.

Then at my cousin’s house, we had their traditional Key Lime Pie. (Weird for rural Massachusetts?  Sure.  But we eat it every year.)

Meanwhile, texts and tweets poured in from friends, each with their own holiday junk food – homemade toffee in London, chocolate pancakes in California, marshmallow apple jack fritters from Texas. (Want the recipe? Ask Jess at Marc Jacobs.)

So do you have a traditional holiday junk food?y de

Tell us all about it… then tell us how to drag ourselves out of bed for yoga / dance class / running once this tummy-stuffed holiday is over.

xo faran (holiday desserts = apple crisp, klondike bars (my dad is obsessed, don’t ask why), and root beer floats)

Jenny Humphrey Approved

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Taylor Momsen may be the new face of New Look, but her character Jenny Humphrey usually wears clothes that are way more expensive than the stuff sold at the British chain store.  Besides those YSL bags she’s bought for friends and rivals, there’s also the black lace blazer she’s been rocking around Lily’s penthouse lately, which is from Marc by Marc Jacobs.  Though technically last season, it’s still very chic, and now onsale.  The Outnet has it for $174 (down from $470) and we’ve seen it kicking around the MxM boutique in Boston, too.  Just don’t wear it in front of the adolescent Queen Bee, or be prepared to face a social reckoning…

See Heart

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Hey Gap Kids,

Thanks for these cute (but subtle!) shades coming out in January 2010.

They’re $9.50

They come in pink and green.

Really, who could ask for anything more?

(Except, like, Alexander Skarsgaard visiting the NYLON NY office for the whole day and telling us secrets from True Blood’s third season.  But realistically?  Yeah, cute glasses.)

Proenza Makes a Splash

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Thanks to T Magazine and Kirna Zabete for unearthing this collaboration:

Proenza Schouler teams with the Shire Board Company to make this limited-edition surfboard for Spring 2010.

Made with rice paper and an epoxy resin finish, the board is a fully functioning surf tool, although most collectors will probably just hang it on their wall.

Chanel and Lily Pulitzer have done surfboards in the past.

This one is available only at Kirna Zabete, the Soho NY boutique that’s also home to NYLON TV host Becka Diamond, and retails for about $3000.

Yeah, $3000.  Which is why you’re gonna want to hang it on your wall instead of surf with it…
