Bess = Bliss

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Warning:

Downtown stud source Bess is going online, and only at Net-a-Porter.

Troll their site for studded miniskirts, studded sneakers, and their trademark studded boots (at left).

As if there were any hope left to restrain ourselves from shopping (for ourselves) just hours before Christmas.

Credit cards out, closets open, cue doomsday music.

(Collection, $295 – $1195 at Net-a-Porter or Bess NYC)

Feathers = Mistletoe?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Julian, baby:

You know I love you.

I was even going to call your cover of SNL’s “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” the holiday song of the year.

But then you went on Jimmy Fallon with some weird feather thing dangling from your ear, and you lost me.

It doesn’t help that Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles teamed up on a stellar track of their own, the perfectly-titled “Merry Christmas Baby (Please Don’t Die)”.

So can we agree that 2010 will see no feathers within a five foot radius of your leather jacket-clad body? xxRebecca

Up the Lacquer

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The girls at Mama’s A Rolling Stone have done some serious investigative shopping, and here’s what they’ve found:

The limited-edition Chanel nail polishes that are supposed to debut in January are actually available to buy now.

Head over to Chanel.com and get your hands on them before they’re gone (and like Rodarte for Target, they will be gone).

Tag! Mysterious

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Last week, we got some graffiti in our Inbox.

The problem?

It didn’t have a name, a place, nothing.

So click through below and tell us if you recognize the art.

Then email me – faran@nylonmag.com – and tell me where it is!

You can also email with other graffiti photos.

We always need more!

(PS – Nerdy Art Note -

I love how this painting is a hybrid of Japanese Geisha woodcuts and the Art Nouveau portraits of Alphonse Mucha, who documented famous singers, actresses, and socialites of the early 1900s in his paintings and drawings.)

The Happiest Shoes in the World

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

It’s no secret we’re a huge fan of Toms Shoes, especially since our fashion intern, Caitlin Coble, took off for California to work on the front lines of the footwear brand.

Now Toms has collaborations with Ralph Lauren Rugby (left) and dozens of global artists…

Plus a super-cute new video on their website.

Want to see it?

Click here – and leave a comment for Caitlin.

She misses you guys!

I Can Vouch For… Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Who: Amina Akhtar, fashion editor at New York Magazine

What: Laura Mercier’s oil free tinted moisturizer in Almond—it’s the perfect color for me, which is usually an impossible thing to find.

Where: Sephora, $40.

When: Every damn day. Can’t afford to be seen without it! It makes my skin glow and is light enough to wear in the summer as foundation. In the winter, if I want the coverage to be heavier, I just add a bit more.

How: I use a makeup sponge and blend blend blend. And when I really want to look good, I add more. My mother is so proud. (She always said, never go out sans makeup; you never know who you’ll run into.)

The Art of Paris

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Paris Hilton made a t-shirt for Forever 21.

It’s $12.80.

It features her “whimsical” drawings of kitties, puppies, and bunnies (plus a Disney-esque bluebird and a rainbow).

It sends all proceeds to the Starlight Foundation, which assists terminally ill children and their families.

Would you wear it?

And – serious question – how many of those critters are actually Paris’ pets?

We’re guessing at least half.

(You can also make a direct donation to the Starlight Foundation here)

What’s Up, Docs?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Speaking of movies to watch over break, we’d like to draw your attention (again) to Hulu.com.

Sure, it’s tough to download a bootleg Avatar from the 100% legal site, but they’ve got a very cool stash of documentaries that are free, engaging, and sometimes hysterical.

Our pick?

We Are Wizards, the recent documentary that films Harry Potter fans around the world.

Included in the film are professors of mythology and literature, die-hard Potter kids, podcasting adults, and members of the rock band “Harry and the Potters,” who sing exclusively about Ron, Hermione, and the death-defying powers of the Nimbus 3000.

Not included?

The teen artists who made Harry Potter’s Puppet Pals on YouTube – which is a bummer because it’s one of our favorite videos ever.

Pink is Perfect

Dear TopShop,

Thank you for these light pink thermal long johns.

They look amazing with our giant black sweater dresses from Diesel, Stella McCartney, etc.

They are also actually warm.
