Red, White, and Shoe

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

I’ll admit it: I’m kinda obsessed with the Olympics.

From Rachael Flatt to Tim Burke, I can’t get enough of the quadrennial event.

Which explains why I’m also obsessed with these rain boots.

They’ll keep your feet dry whether you’re walking to work or slopeside watching the the moguls competition.

And with only 2,000 made (with 1,500 pairs numbered), they’re nearly as hard to get as a gold medal. Go for the gold here. xxRebecca

Love To Love You, Baby

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Spotted at the Pringle show in London: Courtney Love.  We could see her glitter eyeshadow all the way across the runway.  Damn, it was cool.

Shoe Are You?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

As long as we’re on the subject of British fun, check out these heels from Charlotte Olympia.

Designed by English artist Charlotte Dellal, they’re hot pink and red and leopard print.

And yet, basically, they work -

As long as you’re going to a party in a cab…

And not walking in the slushy streets of late February.

Of course, if you want to save them for April or May, that’s cool too.

Desperately Seeking Broadway

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

We’ve learned in London that the Brits love their musicals.

Mama Mia was last year’s top grossing film, Billy Elliott and Legally Blonde are both successful movie-to-play transfers, and the subway is swamped with ads for Grease.

The latest West End hit?  Desperately Seeking Susan, with songs by Blondie.

Sound crazy?  Yeah, we thought so too.  But even wackier:

Can you guess which of the titles below isn’t a current London play?

a) Phantom of the Opera, Part 2

b) Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical

c) Vivienne Westwood, The Musical

d)  Cannibal! The Musical

e) Thriller Live: The songs of Michael Jackson

Mulberry Parties Across From Prince Will

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

It’s not every day you get invited to a royal residence, so when Mulberry asked if I’d come to their massive bash at Kensington Palace – the former home of Princess Diana and current crash pad for Prince William – it wasn’t hard to say yes.

What was hard?

Trekking in heels across gravel, mud, and cobblestones to The Orangery, a Victorian greenhouse-turned-party-house sitting across the street from Will’s royal abode.  But we weren’t the only ones to hike it in stilettos -

Also at Mulberry’s mad tea party were Alexa Chung, Leigh Lezark, Peaches and Pixie, Jade Parfitt, Anja Rubik, and a hundred other bright young things with very proper accents.

After downing margaritas and running through the palace topiaries – our Edward Scissorhands moment of the week – we scooted inside to hear the British band Delphic, and bumped right into Ke$ha, who told u$ how much $he loved the Vivienne We$twood $how (we missed it, but for a good cause – we were interviewing Sienna Miller!).

And then it was time to go home, with – alas! – no sight of Prince William.  We heard Kristen Stewart and R-Patz got a pretty good view of him, though, when he presented an award at the BAFTAs!

The OMG HOH LOL Manicure

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Backstage at Henry Holland’s show this afternoon, we met some lovely women from Kinetics, a salon in London that specializes in over-the-top manicures.

Their nails for Henry’s show were long, straight-edged, white, and embossed with varsity letters that spelled out familiar text messages.

Among the acronyms:

IDTS (I don’t think so)

IHML (I hate my life)

CTFU (Chill the fuck out)

And, at left, NAGL.

That stands for “not a lot going on,” but actually, in the case of this beauty trend, there is.

State of the Union (Jack)

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Question: What’s up with the orange, green, and blue Union Jack flag that flies over the Thames during London Fashion Week?

Answer: It’s part of LFW’s young designer initiative, and the flag – designed by knitwear wizard Louise Gray – isn’t actually permanent.

Each day, another designer’s interpretation of their national banner will fly in a place of honor at Somerset House, the palace-turned-navy-base where Fashion Week takes place each season.

Keep your eyes peeled – you never know whose freak flag will fly next!

Girls Gone Styled

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

A fashion confession:

I’m nervous about Calvin Klein’s dresses.

Not on the runway, where they look fantastic, or on most celebrities, where they look divine.

No, I’m nervous that designer Francisco Costa makes minimalist chic so cool, so classic, and so confident that a girl like me – kooky, ultra boho, messy hair, curves – can’t wear it well.

Thankfully, Helena Christiansen proved me wrong at the Calvin Klein party during New York Fashion Week.  The NYLON veteran (who founded the magazine with Marvin and shot its first cover, with Liv Tyler!) wears her Calvin Klein dress with flats, bedhead, and what appears to be a major push-up bra.  And she looks amazing.

Okay, so it doesn’t hurt that she’s standing next to Kate Bosworth, and that she’s a supermodel, but whatever – anything for a little style courage, right?

Du Jour Means Friendship

Friday, February 19th, 2010

A few weeks ago, the conversation in the office turned to boy bands.

Specifically, the golden era in the late-’90s, early-’00s, when bands like Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, and 98 Degrees ruled the airwaves.

Yeah, they were kinda cheesy, but also put out some of the catchiest songs of the decade (“Tearin’ Up My Heart”, anyone?).

No film better captured it than Josie and the Pussycats, which boasts one of the funniest opening five minutes ever with its fictional boy band, Du Jour.

In it, the four piece hums the Entertainment Tonigh theme song, complain about facial hair on Coke cans, and–okay, okay, it doesn’t sound as funny on paper. But we promise that it’s hilarious.

And there’s no reason not to watch it, since Josie and the Pussycats is now streaming on-demand on Netflix. (You can also watch the opening scene on YouTube.)

Du Jour means a lot of things, but on the top of the list should be “comedic gold.” xxRebecca

Some Bunny To Love

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Our obsession with bunnies is no secret.

In fact, it might be one of the few topics that rivals nail polish in terms of sheer number of posts on the site.

We can’t help it: They’re cute, they’re clever, and they’re popping up everywhere.

Now, adding to our growing collection of tees, bags, and calendars, is this rabbit ring from Fred Flare.

It comes in gold or silver-toned metal, and at $12 each, you could order a few and not feel guilty.

Think of it as a chance for your jewelry collection to multiply like, well, rabbits. xxRebecca
