Tag! Kate Expectations

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

“Hi Faran,

This is a photo I took last summer in NYC.

It was posted on a building (190 Bowery) which is completely covered in graffiti; including spray-painted tags, pieces, and paste-up graff like this.

Love,

Mara.”

Thanks!

We had this tagger up last year, and totally disagreed with the “rich girl, poor girl” philosophy – but always love more Kate Moss :)

If you have graffiti, send it over to faran@nylonmag.com

Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

You probably remember Abigail Lorick as the designer whose clothes make up the bulk of Blair Waldorf’s wardrobe.

But this Spring, she’s also got a Kool Aid and Crayola streak, as evidenced by these dotted shorts.

A companion piece to the dress that NotCouture crushed on yesterday, the shorts are slightly longer than a hotpant, and hit directly on the hip.

Wear them to the beach with a bikini, or to the office with ballet flats and a long-sleeve blouse.

You can also pair them with a navy blazer, high-necked button-up, headband, and sheer black tights -

If you’re still into the Blair-Before-Chuck kind of look.

(PS – See Abigail on NYLON TV!)

Happy Birthday, Julia Frakes!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Somebody get a vegan cupcake!

This blogger and NYLON Japan contributor has a birthday today.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, Julia moved to New York two years ago to finish school and whip up her blog, Bunny Bisous.

Now she works with designer Rachel Antonoff and models at Next.

She is a founding member of the Save Luella society, and a proud supporter of bunny rights.

Go Julia!

Desperately Seeking Lulu

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Though Lulu Guinness has long been famous for her mantra, “Put on your pearls, girls!” she’s usually displaying her missive in a ladylike, handbag-and-heels kind of way.

But her latest tote bag gets away from that vibe, and instead channels Madonna, circa Desperately Seeking Susan.

The pearls mantra is scrawled, graffiti-style, across the canvas.

The pearls themselves are drawn, Warhol-at-Serendipity style, as if they’re in a hurry to get out the door.

And the bag is giant enough to hold sneakers, or CDs, or secret passwords to every speakeasy in town.

Thanks Lulu, for giving us something – like Old School Madonna – that’s shiny and new.

Yeah, sorry, we went there.

What Would Claudia Wear?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Yesterday, we brought you a review of the new Baby-Sitters Club prequel.

Today, a few excerpts of our favorite Claudia Kishi outfits. You’re welcome.

From The Summer Before:

“Claudia was wearing willowy black pants, cinched at the waist with a drawstring, and a boldly patterned summer shirt with ties that she was adjusting around her midriff. Her midriff would have been bare, but Claud had slithered into a lacy black tank top before she’d put on the shirt. On her feet were delicate silvery sandals, and her hair, which was loooooong and thick, was held away from her face with two silver combs.”

Help Me iPod, You’re My Only Hope!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

When we saw InCase’s newest offering, our reaction was immediate:

C3Po!

Of course, InCase isn’t copping to it.

They’re calling the snap-on protector “The Chrome Slider,” and selling it for $30 on Revolve Clothing.

We adore it, but there’s no way it doesn’t look like the famous Star Wars robot.

Give us a Sharpie to put some eyes and a mouth on there, and we’ve got a George Lucas tribute that puts any Wookie to shame!

Louboutin Goes Low

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The big talk on the Fall 2010 runways was the “kitten heel” -

A lower, blunter, less dangerous way to wear a pump.

Considering all the girls who wiped out in treacherous runway footwear last year, it sounds like a good (and practical, and cool) idea.

But Christian Louboutin’s going a little further.

His new pair of studded shoes isn’t a heel or even a ballet flat -

It’s a sneaker.

Featuring those round studs we keep mentioning, the shoes are made from black leather, and cost $785 - the same amount you’d pay for roughly thirteen pairs of Converse!

We think this calls for some good old fashioned DIY -

Some studs, a screw driver or hammer, and an afternoon of free time, and you’ll have the latest look.

Jaguar Love Returns!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

After Jaguar Love shredded our audiences into oblivion this summer, we didn’t know where the band was headed.

We heard rumors that they’d moved to Timbuktu and started an Ashram.

We heard rumors that they’d met Floria Sigismondi through their friends, Living Things, and began working on a rock biopic.

We heard they bought an ice cream truck and drove it to Canada.

But it turns out Jaguar Love is alive, well, and playing in NYC!

Check out the flier at left, and get ready:

They’ll be onstage at GERMS, the hipster party that emerges in Brooklyn each Friday, to the delight of many American Apparel employees.

But those attending, be warned -

You will never get “We Stayed Up All Night” out of your head.

Ever.

Get Neon Indian, For Free

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

We usually don’t hype ads on our site, because it’s cheesy and also (probably) illegal.

But Mountain Dew’s new promo for Neon Indian is pretty great.

You click the ad on our homepage, you get a free song, and you get to stream Neon Indian’s album all day from your work, your bedroom, or whatever.

Combine that with Neon Indian’s free song this week on iTunes, and our Neon Indian band crush, and you’ve got yourself a good starter collection until they go on tour.

So apologies for hyping our own advertisement, but since it’s for free (and good) music, we figured this one time, it’s okay.
