Hear Me Now: Dum Dum Girls

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

It’s no secret that I’m a major fan of Dum Dum Girls.

Last spring, I got my hands on Catholicked (first pressing!).

Last summer, I caught the band at their very first show.

Last fall, I asked Dee Dee all about being a shy, angst-y teen.

Now, nearly a year after first posting songs on the MySpacce page, the debut album is finally coming out.

I Will Be is everything you liked about Dum Dum Girls in the first place (girl group harmonies, fuzzy guitars), only a bit cleaned up, thanks to producer Richard Gottehrer (who used to work with Blondie and the Go-Gos) .

And if it makes you nostalgic?

Also pick up the Black Tambourine‘s eponymous album reissue, which comes out today. If the band sounds a bit like Dum Dum Girls, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, or Vivian Girls, it’s because, well, they inspired all three of them; the twee-pop four-piece was around back when Bush Senior was President. xxRebecca

Tag! Bogota

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

“Hey Faran!

Here I´m sending you some (of many) really cool graffiti I found on the streets of Bogotá, Colombia.

Hope you like it and may be some day you´ll visit this fantastic city…

Paloma”

We can’t wait to visit Colombia!

In the meantime, we can’t wait for more graffiti.

Send it to faran@nylonmag.com, please!

State of the Union

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

A while back, we made Ironic Sans our site of the day.

It was a maddening game, and also quite simple:

Write out all 50 States in ten minutes or less.

Michael tried it, and forgot Utah.
Jay tried it, and forgot Nebraska.

Faran tried it, and forgot Illinois.

But Rebecca remembered her elementary school song about the 50 States, and won the whole thing – in two minutes.

Try to beat her!

Glasses Half Full

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Last summer, Cynthia Rowley showed off their two-tone sunglasses.

This summer?

Theo Eyewear is getting in on the fun.

The Antwerp, Belgium brand has a series of shades that double your pleasure, double your fun with double the amount of color.

We’re partial to these chartreuse – slash – tortoise shell sunglasses, but there are as many colors as there are combinations.

The only requirement?

When you’re wearing these, the glass is always half full. xxRebecca

My Shampoo Is an Enabler

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

I’m a massive fan of LUSH haircare, especially their amazing stout shampoo.

The first time I bought it, I was fifteen and visiting Scotland, and though I didn’t like the taste of Guinness, I loved how the beer – combined with Lush’s signature soap – lathered my hair into a shiny, strong mess.

I’ve used the shampoo for over ten years, but apparently, my hair has a drinking problem, at least according to Lush’s new shampoo.

Called “Rehab,” it’s a  moisturizing froth that promises to detox and restore your trashed tresses.

Oh my gosh. My hair needs an intervention. xo faran

Who’s That Girl?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

If you’re into celeb culture (and really, who isn’t?), you should click through and check out Unreality Magazine.

The sparse website (more like a blog) has culled a fascinating group of celeb photos, most taken before they were stars.

There’s Madonna by a high school water fountain, Angelina Jolie as a baby, and Francis Ford Coppola with a toy gun held to his head.

But then there’s Marilyn Monroe as a teenager, left, and while you recognize her immediately, it still kind of startles.

First of all, she’s teeny tiny.  You can see her chest bones poking out of her swimsuit,  and her arms and legs are downright spindly.

Next, she’s got a massive amount of curly hair, very different from the controlled coif she perfected for The Seven Year Itch.

And finally, she’s just so young, it’s really upsetting.

Also, Urban Outfitters, why have you not made that bathing suit?

It’s the Top

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

If you’re in New York this Thursday, you can RSVP (via Facebook!) to attend our NYLON party with Topshop.

Besides seeing all of us, you can also dance, drink, and – this is the big one – get 20% off any and all Topshop purchases.

We’re already gunning for these “skater boots” from Topshop’s Unique collection.

But honestly, they’re super-adorable $50 ballet flats ($40 with the discount!) are pretty tempting, too.

Click through for the party…

The Kit Kat Club

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Our web editor, Rebecca Davis, just got back from Tokyo.

She was especially taken with the Kit Kat Bars, since they come in 19 different flavors, including Green Tea (see left).

Now intern Ali is equally obsessed, thanks to a recent article in London’s Independent.

It talks about how Tokyo’s most popular Kit Kat flavor is Sakura (cherry blossom, in English), and how they also make them with soy sauce.

Sounds… um… yummy?

Mission: Missoni

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Margherita Missoni is an actress and designer, but she’s better known (of course) as the daughter of Italian fashion legend Angela Missoni.

You can catch her in our first-ever It Girls issue (October 2007), or this month on FashionAir, where Margherita talks about her family, her style, and her favorite places in New York.

You can even watch Margherita on your iPhone, thanks to YouTube.
