Spotted: Our Favorite Teen Actress at NYU

Is Dakota Fanning considering a college degree?
We spotted the young star getting a tour of Gallatin, the school of independent study at NYU.
Will she follow in the Olsens’ fashionable footsteps and enroll at the massive college?
Or was she just doing research for a role -
Her newest project, Betsy and the Emporer, puts her opposite Robert De Niro, who plays Napoleon Bonaparte at the end of his life in exile.
If Dakota does choose college, we imagine the disciplined young actress studying something brainy, like political science or anthropology.
Of course, she could also major in Vampire Studies to prepare for Twilight 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7…

From what I’ve read before, I think it’s a very good bet that she’ll go to college. This is the first time I’ve read anything about how she’s handling her decision. Nice news item.
Just a hunch of course, but I think Dakota would be looking at studies which would enhance her ability to act in serious roles (or maybe direct). I have no doubt that she loves acting dearly (one of the things I admire most about her). IMO, this would mean learning about the big-picture themes of human history and life as well as the those of the human character. (Maybe even studying the personality disorders in “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” published by American Psychiatric Association might be valuable.) I’d think powerful literature would help too: Victor Hugo, Ibsen, …. Anyway, Gallitan’s individualized study program sounds like an interesting option for Dakota. The Wikipedia page for Gallitan says: “Students are expected to design their own interdisciplinary program that meets their specific interests and career goals.” Sounds good to me; however, getting the design right would, I think, be a real challenge.
I wonder if she’s already decided against Juilliard, also in NYC? Juilliard has a drama division but I have no clue how that might help Dakota–or if it would help at all. One gathers from those who work with her that she’s already a pro and has been for a long time. Even so, meeting some of the talented Juilliard students would likely be a pleasure for her and provide some great connections for later years; however, being in NYC at Gallitan, she could surely meet Juilliard people without attending Juilliard.
Whatever school she attends, visiting Gallitan says she’s very serious about her decision, which is what I expect from her. As an old girlfriend of mine would say, “Dakota is no piece of fluff.”
Vampire Studies for Twilight 7… ?
Oh horrors!
I can hardly wait for Dakota to age beyond these YA movies.
A question I have is about whether we can expect any new movies while she goes to college. Maybe she could shoot during summers if she could get movies that would do that. I hate to think of 4 years with no movies from Dakota, but I also wouldn’t care to see her drag school out by skipping quarters for shoots during the school year. More decisions in a life that will get more complex in the next few years.

Dakota’s the new Jodie Foster. Except I think Jodie didn’t make any movies while she attended college. Dakota will. While in high school she filmed The Runaways last Summer. She was brilliant in that film by the way. Go see it. If for no other reason than to see Dakota perform Cherry Bomb. Amazing.
Anyway, Dakota will still film during the summer and spring break and such.
Only 16. We have decades of great performances to look forward to from her.

Since when is the most brainy thing to study anthropology? Is it that unlikely that she would study physics or mathematics?

At Gallatin the people come up with their own MAJORS and take courses they think will help them succeed with that said major.

“…brilliant in that film….”
This is the 1st fan report that I’ve read and it’s right in line with what I’d expect from Dakota. From the movie’s trailer, and what I’ve read, I would most likely not be interested in this film if Dakota weren’t in a lead role. But, like “Hounddog”, maybe I’ll even like the movie when I finally see it (hopefully via iTunes). Who knows, perhaps the Cherie Currie role will replace Lewellen as my
favorite performance by Dakota. (Just to be clear, I distinguish favorite performance from favorite character.)
One of the things I admire about Dakota’s work was stated by Michael Caine very clearly in an interview a few days ago. He said something like: “I’ve done my job if the audience doesn’t see me but only the character.” When I watch one of Dakota’s movies, I don’t see her anywhere around and it’s always like: “News flash — you’re not gonna.” I think Dakota might say, “it’s called acting.” And, it’s reason enough for me to watch her as Cherie Currie. (Michael Caine’s statement has got me thinking about a Michel Caine/Dakota Fanning movie. Hmmm — an awesome pairing indeed!)
“Only 16. We have decades of great performances to look forward to from her.”
Yes, and those of her fans who’re having a problem with her growing up, are going to miss out.
The whole “brainy” (yuck word) issue is a skewed perspective; there are brilliant people in lots of fields — not just in the “hard” sciences. I hope Dakota selects her course of studies according to what she sees as her future needs, and I’d think this would be dominated by the movie-making career goals that she’s so committed to. I just can’t see why physics or math would be really important to her. Even if she played one of the great woman scientists, from Hypatia forward, a degree in physics or math would not be needed. So, I think it’s very unlikely that she’ll choose anything like physics or math. (If she’s spotted visiting CalTech in Pasadena, then I’ll have to revisit this whole matter.)

One of the Gallatin pages for “Prospective BA Students”, says:
“In Gallatin’s undergraduate program, you combine study in your chosen area of concentration with a liberal arts education focusing on significant texts and the history of ideas. Your course work will consist of classes offered within Gallatin as well as in the various schools of New York University. This solid foundation in the liberal arts tradition is augmented by elective components such as arts workshops, advanced writing courses, community learning courses and projects, internships, independent study, private lessons in the arts, and study abroad.”
Independent study imay be part of the program but not the whole of it.

So did Dakota ever enroll? What’s the story? I hope she gets an education because it seems there aren’t too many stars that burn out if they’ve been to college, Or did I just make that up?
