When you think about high school extracurricular activities, most people think football, debate, and drama.
This new indie documentary wants you to think again.
Louder Than a Bomb follows four Chicago-area poetry teams and their prep to compete in the world’s largest youth slam.
And while the movie’s performance scenes are awesome (students recite original work in front of a massive cheering audience that rivals Homecoming crowds) we’re more interested in the way filmmakers Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel go behind the scenes to show how each of the students’ personal struggles parallel their respective poetry.
The result?
Equally parts heartbreaking and inspirational, this film is a reminder that even Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs had to start somewhere….so why shouldn’t it be at a local high school?
