Has anyone who posted here actually Read the book? In my home we eat vegan, when my kids go into the world they choose what they want to eat. David's reaction is akin to a kid coming home to say he joined the nazi party.....I would hope a parent would support a child's exploration. and to all you protein alarmists....a baked potato has all the protein you need....1 serving of Tofu, peas, corn, broccoli, spinach, chickpeas...etc etc etc give up the protein argument.

If a kid comes and says to their parents that he wants to be vegan, I believe they should be concerned! It is just not right for a kid to think about those kind of thing at a young age. It is ok if a kid decides to become a vegan when he is 16 or over (then he almost fully understands his or her actions))

So hey Emma, how much "protein" is in meat? You probably have no idea. You probably think milk is full of calcium too! Maybe you should read this book so you can get a little education. Meat is not the only source of protein. There are TONS of meat substitutes and protein substitutes as well. Especially ones that aren't doused in fat like meat is. Also, meat consumption is directly linked to Prostate cancer. Explain that to the kiddies.

A whole foods plant based vegan diet provides all of the essential nutrients we need without causing harm. The nutrients we need most are available in plants, not animals. The animals eat the plants to get the calcium and now days they really aren't eating the plants anymore and the feed is just supplemented.

Why cause the harm? Why not skip the middle man, or the cow, and get the nutrients from the real food. As for protein, protein is made up of amino acids and ALL plant foods have amino acids. Plant proteins do not cause cancer, heart disease, and many other horrible diseases of affluence.

Easting a whole foods, plant based diet is the most best thing we can do for ourselves, our children, the animals, and our planet. I think that this book is great, and its important for children to know where there food comes from. Parents do need to educate themselves on nutrition and making sure they are getting required nutrients and not eating junk food.

Eat your whole grains, legumes, veggies, fruit, nuts, and seeds. Live healthfully and compassionately.

I think it's important for children to know where their meat comes from and how many animals have to suffer for their happy meals. I ALSO think they should understand that there are family farms that provide ACTUAL cage-free and free-range meat that no doubt tastes better. I wouldn't know because I myself am vegetarian but have no problem with meat-eaters who are conscious of the consequences of their food choices/ who seek out alternatives. Kids should know but they should also be presented with ALL the facts so they too can make informed decisions.

Emma-
There are lots of other (healthier) sources of protein.
The average american gets over 2x as much protein as they need in a day.
A 150 pound adult needs about 7 oz of meat a day to reach their daily protein intake.
You can get that from a burger, or healthier sources.
I prefer to eat smaller amounts of protein throughout the day rather than have it all in a slab of meat. Pastas, cereals, nut butters, veggies, rice, breads, most vegan foods have protein in them. people forget to take those into account rather than just meat.
And having too much protein leads to worse health consequences than not enough.
If I have children, they will be raised vegan.
I would be doing my children a disservice by introducing them to a world of cruel (and unhealthy) eating habits.

Kaitlin, it's not the fruits and veggies that cause malnutrition in vegan kids. It's the lack of protein, iron and other nutrients that they don't get when they (or their parents) cut meat out of their diets. If parents want to let their kids go vegan, they need to consult a pediatrician or nutritionist to make sure their kids will develop properly and have a balanced diet.

"It could put children’s health at risk if they stick to an all-vegan diet." Yeah. Forget about the health risk associated fast food and school lunch. Fruits and veggies will be what kills them.

I think it’s great that there is a book exposing children to different lifestyles and eating habits, but it’s unfortunate that they would use such vindictive language to describe a perfectly normal choice, such as meat eating. I think ultimately by taking such an aggressive stance, with the target audience being children, the author did a disservice to herself. If she had used a more pacific approach, she could have done a great thing by introducing children to something new. All in all, a great idea, but a distasteful execution.

Well, if a kid tells his or her parents that they want to be vegan, that's better than those cases you hear of from time to time where young children die of malnutrition because the parents DECIDED they should be vegan. At least the kid is involved in their own process. But I'm an open-minded yet unrepentant meat eater, so what do I know anyway? PROTEIN FOR EVERYBODY!
