What Should Happen in the 10 Things I Hate About You Sequel?

ten thingsIn perhaps the strangest news of the day, filmmaker Gil Junger has told Variety that he plans on making a sequel to 10 Things I Hate About You.

The movie, which hit theaters in 1999, was a Taming of the Shrew retelling, starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in breakout movie roles.  (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Gabrielle Union, and Larisa “Alex Mack” Oleynik carried the very enjoyable subplot.)

This isn’t the first time Mr. Junger has mined his ’90s hit for material:

In 2010, he recast the film, set it in an alternate universe (one that took place in current day, and took much longer to play out…), and made it an ABC Family TV Show.  (Thanks to actresses Lindsey Shaw and Meaghan Jette Martin, it was actually kind of amazing.)

Junger tells Variety the film will be darker, with a major plot reference to suicide:

“It is the story of two relatable, ordinary people with normal jobs and normal desires whose seemingly great lives have become unmanageable… Two people who go to the same place at the same time to end it. … Their chance meeting is so awkward, so raw, and so funny, they postpone their intentions and go their separate ways.”

Variety confirms Hayley Atwell will star, but hasn’t mentioned if / how Heath Ledger’s tragic death will influence the movie, or possible roles for Stiles, Levitt, etc.
