I do this same hairstyle in a coetmlpely different way! I put my hair in a high pony and make sure that everything before the pony is the way I want (tight to the head, a little volume, messy, etc.) and then move on to the bun part. I take an aligator clip (the size will depend on the amount of hair) and I clip all of my hair in the pony to my scalp above the ponytail. Then I take the ends and stick them through the pony tail holder underneath so they end up inside the bun. Pin and move hair around to keep the bun even. I’ll have to try this way as well!
