Gel Nails Get the DIY Treatment

DIYgelFrom the basic two coats of Essie to layers of intricate paint pen designs, we’ve tried just about every nail lacquer option there is.

We’ll be the first to put some color on bare nails during a lunch break – mostly because our office houses a larger than life nail polish collection – but since we don’t exactly have a UV light handy, we’ve had to leave gel nails to the professionals.

Sephora’s collaboration with polish masters O.P.I. may change that. Their DIY gel manicure system includes an LED gelshine light — that’s how the gel is set — a base coat, top coat, your choice of gel color, and all of the basic manicure tools.

The gel color gets about 3 to 5 applications, which at $40 in a salon (per visit) is almost equal to the cost of the whole kit at $160. After that, each nail color costs $17.

We’ve yet to try this one out (though you so know we will!), but most of the reviews were from first-timers who only had positive things to say. Will you test out the at-home wonderkit or will your manicure remain 20 minutes of “I’m not doing anything” peace and quiet at the salon?
