You wake up 30 minutes after your alarm goes off, and think, “Crap, I have nothing to wear.”

And then you have three options:

1.  Tear apart your entire closet searching desperately for something both cool and completely non-dependent on complicated hair and makeup… Or…

2.  Throw on a black dress and black shoes, thereby looking alive (at least) but also totally blend-into-the-wall bland… Or…

3.  Grabbing a white oxford shirt, jeans, ballet flats, and a trench coat.  It’s a timeless look, but also one that quietly insists you’ve got style and not just an oversleeping problem.

Emma Stone demonstrates the look at left, with some modifications – black heels and a smoky eye – that are great if you do have an extra ten minutes to spare (and if you can walk confidently in the heels – if not, forget it!).

You can get yours at almost any clothing store, but listen:

A trench is something you’ll have for your entire life, and it needs to fit you beautifully, otherwise you’ll look like Carmen Sandiego disguised for her big escape.  So even if you’re the type who only spends $50 on an outfit, you might want to consider investing more in this outerwear piece.  It’s something you can wear whatever your age, and it makes you look very chic and adult – not a bad thing, whether you’re an emerging movie star like Emma, or just a cool girl headed to work…
