Fact: Childhood dreams die hard.
This is particularly true when that dream involves becoming a mythical half-human creature of the sea.
If this rings true for you, we’ve got good news:
Several Etsy shops are now selling made-to-swim, customizable mermaid tails…
The downside?
The good ones are upwards of $250…
…and it may be hard to walk around in one of these (on dry land).

Absolutely a fabulous idea. Swimming the mermaid body movement is one of the best things you can do for your body. It strengthens the core and evens out your “sides”. You become strong all over! Keep on swimming.

There are many tailmakers for every budget and realistic level! You can check out a full list of mermaid tail makers on MerNetwork, the largest community for merfolk online, from all over the world! Here is the list: http://mernetwork.com/index/content.php?133-mermaid-tailmakers . We also have MOUNDS of information and experience on how to make every type of tail on the forum, from lycra (low end cost) to silicone (high end cost) tails. The tail pictured is from Mayberry Mermaid Tails- the member who owns it learned how to make their tails from our site, with our users supporting them and giving them advice all the way!
Is it worth it? To the right person, absolutely. For all of us self proclaimed merfolk, you can not put a price tag on the kind of joy it brings you! Some of us love it so much we do it for a living! You can find a list (in progress) of merfolk who are available for hire here: http://www.mermaidtales.net/

I also want to add that if you plan on buying a tail from a tail maker, DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST. Look at reviews not endorsed by the company you’re buying from. MerNetwork is such a site that you can look at- we have a whole forum section for tail maker reviews!
