5 Seconds With Cynthia Rowley

We went backstage yesterday to watch Cynthia Rowley prep for her spring ’13 presentation and we’re really glad that we did.
After seeing Cynthia Rowley’s spring collection it would be an understatement to say that she does not lack imagination. Cynthia dreamed up some of the most creative pieces that we’ve seen all week: Mother of pearl wetsuits that were meant to look like the inside of a seashell, croakies (those things that dorky dads use attach to sunglasses so that they don’t fall off) that were made to resemble a rappers thick gold chain, and probably the coolest thing we’ve seen all week—gold bangles that double as flasks for booze. Cynthia told me that her favorite place to wear alcohol-filled jewelry is the beach. (That just made our entire next summer).
She also gave us a pretty good idea of what to wear next summer. Rowley’s collection was inspired by the beautiful setting downtown at 5 Beekman Street in Manhattan where her presentation—which felt more like a party—took place. Refreshingly, nothing about it followed the strong ’90s theme that’s been trending this week. Rowley has her reasons. “I don’t like that nostalgia or that retro thing so much. There will always be something that comes up because it’s how any creative person is informed; that’s where things come from. I try not to pick a decade.”
Did I mention that there was confetting being poured from a balcony? Yeah, hanging out with Cynthia is really fun.—RAY SIEGEL
