In case you don’t recognize this brunette, it’s Dakota Fanning, who clearly felt like it was time for a change. After years of being blonde, I can empathize. I also happened to have just dyed my hair this exact color and can teach you how to do it.

DYE IT: Clairol Perfect 10 Haircolor, $14.59
For Fanning’s shade use Clairol Perfect 10 in cool brown on dry hair—washing your hair will remove the oils that need to be there during the coloring process. If you have coarse hair you’ll need to leave the color on longer than if you have fine hair. If you have long hair, you should use two boxes of color.

CONDITION IT: Davines NouNou Nourishing Conditioner, $26.50
Always use shampoo for colored hair afterwards—it really does do the trick.

STYLE IT: Sachajuan Shine Serum, $30
After applying a color protecting serum (it will make your new color even shinier), use a wide, flat brush to blow dry hair straight and the part your hair to the side. Use a finishing spray if you feel like you need some extra hold.—RAY SIEGEL
