Century 21 Enters 21st Century

The turning point in The Carrie Diaries pilot (which isn’t on-air until January, but I saw a preview) is when the teenage Carrie Bradshaw takes her first trip to Century 21. She’s blinded by the lights–or by really, really stylish people who shop at the downtown NYC staple for designer pieces at insanely reduced prices.

I won’t spoil any of it for you, but let’s just say if the visit didn’t change her life, it definitely changed her social life for the better.

And really, that’s been the case for a lot of people. Think Jil Sander, Rick Owens, and Alexander Wang (and, as our senior web editor Ray puts it, “lots of socks!”) all suddenly affordable. If you haven’t been to one of their seven locations in New York and New Jersey, you’ve been missing out–until now. This week, Century 21 launches its complete e-commerce site. While you’ll have to create a log-in to gain access to some of their most exclusive sales, you can also get your hands on Levi’s jeans, Miss Sixty dresses, Matt Bernson flats, with just the click of the mouse.

It’s no replacement for the store–if I learned anything from the TV episode, it’s that (spoiler-ish alert) you never know who you may befriend while shopping–but it’s a step in the right direction. –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS
