There’s something about the retro-underground sound of French pop that really gets me going.

The only problem? I don’t speak French–so unless I look up a translation of the lyrics (which I rarely ever do), I have no idea what I’m actually dancing to.

Enter Beat Mark, a new French band singing in English. Mixing a dose of The Smiths with a dash of ’90s grunge (a la Pavement), the foursome makes the kind of music I want to dance to all night, and then listen to the next morning. Their debut album Howls of Joy drops on February 18th, but in the meantime, you can preview their amazing low-fi melodies and ultra-cool vibe in this brand new video for their single “Purple Joy.” No translation necessary.
