Battle of the (2000s) Bands

We’ve already written breathlessly about the return of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Strokes–but always separately.
But when both released new singles within a week of each other, it hit us: We’re in the midst of a Battle of the 2000s Bands. Now don’t get us wrong; both are still relevant and are true music icons in our book. But it’s hard to argue that there were many groups from the aughts who were more influential in the indie world than these two. More than 10 years later, where do they stand?
We’re going to let you figure that one out.
First, give Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ lead single off of their April 16 album, “Sacrilege,” a listen. Not to give too much away, but there’s a gospel choir in there.
OK, now tune in to The Strokes’ second song off their upcoming album (out March 26), “All The Time.”
Having heard both, which are you more excited for? Ready for the return of Karen O? Dying to spend hours listening to Julian Casablancas? Sound off in the comments and let us know! –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

YYY!

While I prefer the Strokes overall, I have to say the YYY song has a much more organic feel to it. Definitely no question there. The Strokes have just gotten really formulaic. Maybe they always were. The strange thing is that this fact doesn’t bother me as much as it does with other bands. Maybe because I discovered them when I was still impressionable and vulnerable. Whatever, I’m hoping the rest of the album is better and that JC has another solo album left in him.

If you’re in the mood to destroy any remotely positive opinion you had about these bands, watch the documentary Kill Your Idols…
