Everything You Wanted to Know About the Beauty Look at Chanel

Whether you love or loathe Chanel, it’s a cold hard fact that few shows exert more influence over beauty regimens–in particular, the polish we paint on our nails–than the French fashion house. From dark nails to light, opaque to french manicured, if Karl sends it down the runway on his models’ hands, it’s destined to be a sell-out shade (and an oft-copied one at that).

So rather than report on the clothes at this morning’s show (everything was black, blue, or red-pink, and there were lots of double-breasted jackets), we’re going to get to the good stuff first: the nails.

Reports from backstage confirm that the color–an orange-red–is new for Chanel and is called “Elixir.” No word yet as to when it will be hitting stores, but if you’re already falling for the classic shade try OPI’s On Collins Avenue or Deborah Lippmann’s Supermodel.

And if you find it a little, well, underwhelming? Go for the makeup look instead; for fall ’13, creative director of makeup Peter Phillips lined the upper lash line with large chunks of glitter. Like, disco ball style lids. Want to try it ourself? Pick up chunky glitter at the nearest craft supply store, or for something a little more subtle try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ loose glitter. Then just dab some pink cream blush along your cheeks and apply a subtle but sweet lipstick (Philips used Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine) and you’re ready to start the party.
