Flashback Friday: Get Up, Stand Up

Every Friday, we’ll be digging through the NYLON archives and sharing with you our favorite flashback moments.
While digging through the NYLON archives, I was excited to catch a glimpse of some throwback gems. There were so many issues I wanted to check out that I accumulated a stack of mags from the early ’00s, set them down on my desk, and didn’t even have time to get through the one on top: May 2000.
The highlight of the issue for me is a trippy shoot seemingly shot for 3-d glasses, called “Get Up, Stand Up: Rasta, Reefer, Reggae, and Denim – from Jamaica With Jah Love.” The title alone got me, but the photos were even better. It Girl model Devon Aoki rocks an Erykah Badu-inspired afro and Rasta-colored clothing that, nearly 13 years later, you’d imagine Riri wearing on the beach in Barbados.
The shoot is so reminiscent of this year’s Grammy Bob Marley tribute performance that if Riri hadn’t killed it so hard in that red dress, her next option should have been this reefer-printed bandeau.
